Part of being a Ranger included the occasional patrol. While most of these patrols took place around a city's outskirts or known hot spots for criminal activity, it wasn't unheard of for some members to be sent to a route or another city to provide additional support. Although Kane should have been excited about being given such an opportunity to travel for work, he was largely underwhelmed with his particular task. Everyone in the region knew that Route 1 was pretty harmless. It was rare to find any overtly hostile Pokémon in the the southeastern-most corner of Ageos, and even when there were dangerous Pokémon in the area, they tended to avoid places where there was a lot of human activity -- ie, cities and routes. Everyone in the Ranger Union knew that Route 1 patrol duty was nothing more than a way to keep low rank Rangers busy.
So although Kane wasn't thrilled about the prospect of being given menial tasks like this, he couldn't deny that it would also be a good learning experience, regardless of what happened. He left Cerise City about midday, heading east along Route 1 toward Shire Town. It wasn't the first time he'd traveled this path before, but it was the first time he'd done it alone. Then again, he wasn't completely alone this time either. Attached to his utility belt was a small Poké Ball with a Panpour inside. The water Pokémon had seen very little combat while under Kane's care, but that was bound to change in due time. Perhaps they'd have a chance to train up while patrolling. In silence, Kane continued to walk, keeping his eyes and ears open for any Pokémon or people.

There weren't too many warm days left in the year. If Ageos' weather was anything like northern Johto's, which it seemed like it was, it was about to turn cold, and she was going to have to bundle up. Queen Zing didn't have that option - she would likely need to hibernate when the temperatures dropped below freezing. It was a race against the clock to get to Cerise City. Due to government regulations, she would need to pick up part of her team from Cerise City, and part of it from Slate. If she could make it to those two towns before things got really cold, she might not be stuck indoors all winter. Once she was a half-mile clear of Shire's western gate, though it wasn't much of a gate to begin with, Shalin took the lone Poké Ball at her side and pressed its release button, bringing forth a giant queen Beedrill that seemed eager to hug her. While it looked dangerous, the bug-type took care not to spear her trainer. "We should be able to get to Cerise and meet your friends real quick, I think!" Shalin reassured the lonely-looking Pokémon. The yellow-and-black companion of hers crawled back to the ground and let Shalin adjust a yellow-and-black saddle that blended in perfectly with the wasp's stripes. Once Shalin made sure all of Queen Zing's gear was properly attached, she scurried aboard and popped her earplugs in. Her skin tingled as her mount's wings got up to speed, sending dust flying everywhere underneath them. The giant wasp lifted the two a few feet off the ground and bumbled westward across the grassland, Shalin with a firm hand on the reins but for the most part letting her Pokémon set the pace. ---- Kane McAlvin NAME SPECIES LV EP Queen Zing Beedrill 10 3{WC: 295} {PC: 1}

Most of the afternoon passed by with little of note. Unless Kane was secretly a botanist, Route aficionado, or an explorer with a particular fascination with trails, this job was proving to be a real bore. Heck, he hadn't even seen any Pokémon! Perhaps if he had Pan out of his ball, was riding on a Pokémon or bike, or decided to go off-roading, he would have had more luck. But as it was, any Pokémon that could see, smell, or hear him coming ran off and hid long before he was within range to notice them. Perhaps he was doing his job wrong. Certainly it was strange to not see anyone or anything, right? Well, maybe not. He could remember stories the elder Rangers would tell about their Route 1 patrolling days and how utterly boring it was. So maybe long stretches of nothing were normal.
He was just beginning to consider turning around and heading back to the Cerise City when he noticed something moving along the horizon. Curious about what it could be and driven to check it out for the simple purpose of having something happen during his patrol, Kane continued down the road, occasionally glancing to either side of the path to make sure he wouldn't be overlooking something in need of his attention. As he walked, he realized that whatever he was seeing was getting closer and was moving faster than any regular human. The novice Range stopped at the side of the road, lifted one hand to shield the sun from his eyes, and squinted to see if he could make out what it was.
Black and yellow. Wings. Two barbs and a stinger. It was a Beedrill, and it looked to be in something of a hurry. Being so far away, Kane was unable to see the trainer riding on its back; however, he assumed it wasn't a wild Pokémon because it stayed low to the ground and followed the Route without veering off into the surrounding wilderness. Its trainer must be nearby, Kane assumed, otherwise there was no reason for the Beedrill to behave the way it was. Instead of continuing to approach the incoming bug or turning around and heading back the way he came, the novice Ranger instead remained in place, watching the Beedrill with one hand on his Panpour's Poké Ball, just in case.

With Queen Zing able to control the pace, she bobbed up and down to try to keep Shalin's skills sharp, even making a few lazy turns from one side of the wide road to the other. Of course, she kept an eye out for oncoming traffic and even just other trainers in general. She would make sure to give travelers a wide enough berth not to be alarmed by the bug-type famous for its aggression and incredibly painful sting. There didn't appear to be any nearby, so she playfully tugged back and forth on her mount. Queen Zing sounded like a revving engine, making quick turns powered by strong bursts of vibration from one wing at a time. Shalin let out a whoop, her voice probably sounding like she was on the other side of a fan from the ears of those who could hear. A little further down the road, Shalin noticed a white-haired man that bravely stood his ground against the oncoming Queen Zing, the only sign of hostility being his hand on a Poké Ball. Most people would flee in terror at the sight of a Beedrill bigger than a human. He must have known the best way to deal with a Beedrill not showing immediate signs of hostility was to stand one's ground and almost act like it wasn't there. The man must have possessed at least some survival skills. Her interest piqued, she had Queen Zing fly as low as she was comfortable with--her legs were almost dragging on the ground. Once they were well within eyesight, the rider waved to the other trainer, the giant bee eventually landing. While she didn't dismount the menacing-looking Pokémon, she did call out to the other traveler once the noisy wings stopped beating. ---- Kane McAlvin NAME SPECIES LV EP Queen Zing Beedrill 10 3{WC: 296} {PC: 2}

Kane's decision to remain standing by the side of the road was less about his survival skills and knowledge of Beedrill behavior and was more about his desire to see what was going on. If it was a lone Pokémon -- either aggressively approaching him to attack or frantically trying to find its trainer, for instance -- then Kane would have been able to handle it better if he let the bug come to him. If it had a trainer nearby, perhaps riding a bicycle which he couldn't see well from how far away he was then that was fine too. He would have been able to see them off with a simple wave as they passed by. Instead, something altogether peculiar happened.
The Beedrill slowed as it neared the novice Ranger and landed a short distance away. It was only then that Kane spotted the young lady riding on its back. He'd never seen such a thing before, and so he was temporarily stunned to silence. Folks tended to ride Mudsdale, Rapidash, or even Arcanine, but a Beedrill...? Kane relaxed and removed his gloved hand from his belt to show that he didn't intend to fight or call out any Pokémon of his own. After returning a wave, he finally spoke. "That's a unique ride you have there," he teased with a smile. His blue eyes shifted to meet the Beedrill's large, red ones. "You're a very strong girl, aren't you?" he asked in a quiet voice, making no attempt to hide his admiration for the giant bee, how well she behaved, and how healthy she looked.

When Shalin saw the white-haired traveler waving and his lips moving, she popped one of her earplugs out. While she could probably hear the on-duty Ranger without doing so, it would be much easier. "Needed to take this thing out first. Can't lose my hearing up here!" She couldn't help but let out a short giggle. "Shalin Nariya, wildest rider this side of Ageos!" How could she claim that title, though? She had just arrived here. Surely there had to be someone more talented than her at her craft, even in a region this small. "I have a few more Pokémon clearing customs right now - if only Queen Zing here could carry one more person, I'd help out. As big as she is, she's not that big. You would call them...unique...as well."Queen Zing relaxed, as docile as a house Pokémon - rather unusual to see for a species known for attacking trainers on sight. Her large, red eyes switched to a slightly brighter shade as she tried her best to make a happy facial expression; Beedrill weren't well-known for showing any emotion other than aggression. When Kane remarked about the Beedrill's strength, she tilted her head to the sky and crawled away from him as to not completely deafen him with her upcoming show of strength. Seeing this coming, Shalin quickly put her other earplug in. The giant, yellow-and-black Pokémon gripped the ground the best she could before buzzing at full speed, threatening to uproot grass in front of her as well as creating quite the wake in a nearby river. A distorted, vaguely joyous cry came from Shalin's mouth, sounding like she was on the other side of a fan. After a few seconds, though, the bug-type relaxed again, Shalin popping her earplug out once more. Kane felt a bit ashamed for having not realized that the trainer had earplugs in, but he got over it with a soft chuckle and a nod to show he understood the girl's reasoning. She introduced herself a Shalin Nariya, "wildest rider this side of Ageos." This elicited another short laugh, not because the novice Ranger doubted this claim, but because it seemed like a very peculiar title to assume for oneself. "Nice to meet you, Shalin. I'm Kane McAlvin, Pokemon Ranger," he introduced, unable to come up with as creative a label for himself as quickly as Shalin had. When she explained where she was going and how she would have offered Kane a ride if Queen Zing was larger, the white-haired man waved a hand dismissively. "Don't worry about me. I'm on patrol, so I'm in no hurry to get anywhere," he explained. This was true, but a part of him was still curious to know how it felt riding on the back of such a massive Beedrill.
The Beedrill in question -- or Queen Zing, as she had apparently been named -- reacted to Kane's compliment regarding her strength by backing up, gripping the ground underneath her, and beating her wings at an incredible rate, causing something of a steady buzzing noise. Dirt flew in all directions, water rippled, and leaves on the nearby trees flew away in the gust of wind. The noise was almost too much to bear, so Kane had to lift his hands and covered his ears until the Beedrill had finished her display of power and speed. After a few seconds, Shalin explained that Queen Zing was easily excited, which Kane responded to with a smile. "That's not a bad thing. She just likes showing off, huh?" he cooed as he flashed a playful smile at the Beedrill.
Once he was finished praising Queen Zing, Kane turned back to Shalin. He wanted to ask if she was interested in walking with him, even just part of the way, but he decided against it. Yes, the trek back would be long and boring, and having the company would help make it more enjoyable, but there were a number of reasons why he chose to keep his mouth shut instead of voicing his thoughts aloud. The most glaring reason, however, was the fact that Shalin seemed to be in a hurry to get to Cerise City to pick up her other Pokémon, and he didn't want to slow her down any more than he already had. So instead, he waved at the duo and bid them farewell by saying, "Well, I won't keep you. You two have a safe flight to the city."

headache-suffering Psyduck echoed from the nearby river. While she didn't want to get into a fight with just one Pokémon at her side, Psyduck were dangerous foes if allowed to use their psychic powers. Considering Queen Zing was a poison-type, the two needed to disable the yellow duck Pokémon, and quickly. The insect took to the air and raised her foreleg stings into the air, again sounding like a revving engine from darting back and forth to disorient the wild. She wasn't noticeably faster without Shalin as a rider, either - another testament to the giant bee's strength. Though her rear sting was her most lethal weapon, her foreleg stings were more flexible and much more practical for combat. While the Psyduck was able to avoid being directly grabbed out of the water, even the glancing blows Queen Zing inflicted were strong. The stings were enough to trigger the peak of the Psyduck's headaches - the only state in which it could unleash a potent Confusion attack. The only thing keeping the Beedrill from collapsing into the river on the spot was her advanced evolutionary state - her heavy carapace allowed her to deflect both physical and mental blows. After discharging its psychic powers, Queen Zing's quarry ducked into the shallows. There wasn't any hiding from a Beedrill, though, particularly not one her size. She floated down to the shallows the Psyduck was hiding in and started beating her wings at almost the same speed as she did when she was demonstrating for Kane. The wake of her buzzing dislocated enough water to expose the Psyduck's hiding spot, allowing her the opportunity to dispatch the wild with a swift thrust of its rear sting. With poison like that coursing through its head and shoulders, this Psyduck wouldn't be getting back up any time soon. Queen Zing, a little less perky but otherwise okay after the battle, returned to Shalin and landed. "Alright, have a good one, then!" She mounted up and started to put her earplugs in, ready to give the command for takeoff. --- Kane McAlvin Queen Zing's level is now 11!NAME SPECIES LV EP Queen Zing Beedrill 11 2{WC: 343} {PC: 4}

After saying their goodbyes, Kane headed off in the direction of Cerise City. Had he seen the Psyduck or Shalin's attempts to disarm it, he would have intervened. However, he had already turned his back to the trainer and her oversized Beedrill by the type the psychic duck had stumbled out of the nearby river. It was the sound of the battle that caused him to turn and race back to the scene, his hand instinctively reaching down for the Poké Ball on his hip just in case Shalin needed assistance. He arrived just in time to see Queen Zing take the Psyduck down with a jab of her stinger, and the duo were praised for their combat skill with some applause and a smile. Kane knew in that instant that Shalin would be able to take care of herself, even on the off chance that some rampaging Pokémon did decide to approach trainers along the route. With yet another wave goodbye, Kane turned and continued west. A few moments later, Shalin and Queen Zing buzzed by and disappeared along the horizon. Alone again, Kane stayed alert for anything that might catch his attention -- like a discarded rare candy! Someone must have dropped it, he thought as he grabbed the hard treat in his hands. "Not a bad find," he chuckled while pocketing the candy and continuing onward.

Shalin waved good-bye once more to Kane. Though expected, given he was a Ranger, the young man appeared to be a good egg. Patrols had to be so boring without a ride Pokémon, and even then...wandering back and forth aimlessly, without a concrete goal, had to be mind-numbing at times, especially in the colder months. Her earplugs now fully in, the golden-haired girl gently pat Queen Zing's head. "Let's get going." Queen Zing turned briefly to face Kane, waving her right foreleg sting back and forth as if waving goodbye. After that, she faced westward and got her wings up to speed, Shalin's skin tingling as she got used to the insect's flight again. The Beedrill's speed got Shalin to Cerise City quickly. A town built along the riverside, it was much larger than Shire, even having a multi-story building or two in its downtown area. With a gentle tug on the hornet reins, Shalin slowed Queen Zing down from her swift pace, now barely able to feel vibration by comparison with how it was before. Thankfully it wasn't too late in the day, so she likely wouldn't have to worry about noise ordinances too much on her way to the Pokémon Center. --- Shalin is exiting this thread; it will now be a solo thread with Kane McAlvin per agreement over Discord.{WC: 206} {PC: 5}

People hadn't been joking when they said Route 1 patrol duty was boring... mind-numbingly so. On multiple occasions, Kane caught himself zoning out and daydreaming about seemingly random things. He wondered whether Shalin caught her Beedrill as a Weedle or if they met after Queen Zing had already evolved. He wondered how long it would take someone to train a Beedrill to fly with a passenger on his back. He wondered if, given its already massive size, his Panpour would be able to serve as a water mount -- and if not then perhaps after evolving? And did the Panpour even want to evolve? They hadn't really discussed the possibility, but it would no doubt come up in due time. Kane blinked, his attention snapping back to the road ahead of him. Slowly stepping out of the trees was a Stonjourner. And it was huge, almost twice his own height. The novice Ranger slowed as he approached the stone titan, not wanting to startle it. mujEp3GGp_ + 0 stealth (rolling to pass by unnoticed)
Fortunately, his presence didn't frighten the Stonjourner, but it was only a matter of seconds before the titan turned and spotted him. From the look of things, the wild Pokémon didn't seem hostile or scared. It seemed confident and curious. It merely stood where it was in the middle of the road, staring at Kane as if it was waiting for him to make the first move. "Go ahead," the novice Ranger ushered, motioning to the opposite side of the path where Stonjourner had appeared to be heading before it had decided to stop in its tracks. As if to spite Kane, the stone beast stomped twice, digging each of its feet into the ground and planting itself firmly in place. "That's not what I meant," the white-haired trainer said, "You're blocking the way now."
The Stonjourner was quick to reply with a high-pitched whine while simultaneously letting out a low grumble. Blocking the way had been its intention all along. Kane normally would have walked around the stone giant, but he knew that this creature was too large and too powerful to bypass, and although it didn't look like it wanted to fight, it obviously didn't want Kane to leave either. Plus, this was part of his job. If he left the Stonjourner, then there was no telling how many trainers would approach it and potentially get injured as a result of trying to pick a fight with the rather stubborn creature. "You want to play?" Kane asked while grabbing his Poké Ball, "Then let's go!" He tossed the ball into the air and out came Pan the Panpour.
The aquatic primate chittered and stared up at the stone titan in front of him but otherwise didn't move. The Stonjourner appeared to shift, and Kane took the advantage to encourage it to move. "That's it, keep going," he said while motioning to the other side of the road again. The giant let our a whine and roar again, still refusing to budge but not making an attempt to attack either. It seemed as though Kane really would have to be the one to initiate things. With any luck, he could befriend the colossus and encourage it to move without resulting to violence. "Pan, Play Nice." The over-sized Panpour did as he was told and smacked the ground in a playful manner.
The Stonjourner was fairly receptive to this behavior, for it responded with some eagerness. Unfortunately, the way it showed said eagerness was by mimicking the Pan. It raised its stone arms into the air and brought them down on the ground, causing the road to cave in and sending some rocks flying in the process. Pan screeched in surprise and leaped backwards, narrowly missing one of the stray rocks. For a moment, Kane wondered if the Stonjourner had almost injured Pan on purpose. If so, it would have meant that his perception had been wrong and the wild Pokémon really was more interested in a fight than pursuing a friendship. However, this theory was quickly dismissed as the stone titan pulled its hands free from the ground and smiled down at Pan and Kane, looking rather proud of itself.
Without any prompting, Pan applauded and chittered with excitement before using Play Nice once more. The Stonjourner wasted no time mimicking Pan, whining in its strange way and slamming its massive stone hands together. Kane could only stand back and smile, amused by how well the two were getting along. The original plan had been to befriend the beast and encourage it to move off the road, but seeing how the two interacted now, he knew that he had to try capturing it. If it didn't want to join his team, that was fine. No hard feelings. But he also knew that Pan would have been so happy to have some company. "Stonjourner," Kane began, causing both Pokémon to stop what they were doing and look in his direction. "I don't suppose you would want to come with us, would you?" he asked while halfheartedly tossing an empty Poké ball at the stone giant.

As much as Kane wanted the Stonjourner to join his team, it didn't seem to feel the same way. In fact, it liked the idea so little that it began to walk off the path at the very thought of it. Maybe it just didn't want to press its luck and risk being captured against its will, or perhaps it had lost interest in the duo altogether, but either way, it waddled off the trail and disappeared through the trees on the opposite side of the path. Kane couldn't help but feel a little offended at how quickly the stone titan had dismissed his offer, but at least it hadn't retaliated with an act of aggressive. "Good work, Pan," the novice Ranger praised while raising his Pokéball and calling the Panpour back. The distraction from the mindless task of patrol duty had been much appreciated, but it had unfortunately been short-lived. It was now time to move on. With a heavy sigh, Kane once again continued walking down the road, keeping his eyes and ears open for any other distractions.
