It had been years since Kane had last visited the Cerise City gym. Ever since his father's passing, he couldn't even bring himself to walk on the same street. But after becoming a Ranger, something drove him to the place. Perhaps he hoped that his father's spirit would still be there, ready to congratulate him. Some superstitious folks liked to claimed that ghost Pokémon were actually the souls of deceased humans. Kane never believed it, but who knew... maybe he would visit the gym and find a Gastly waiting for him. The thought made his heart ache. No, if ghost Pokémon really were the spirits of humans who had not passed on then he hoped to never find one, especially not at the gym where his father met his end.
The neighborhood had fallen to disrepair. It had been struggling financially since Kane was a child, but things had never been this bad before. Houses laid abandoned, shadows shifted in the alleyways, and the Contest Hall had definitely seen better days. Since that fateful day, citizens avoided visiting the area. It was a neighborhood of crime, robbery, and murder. At least, that was what people started to believe. Who could have thought that one person's wrong-doing could end in so much heartache and loss? A death in the family, the closure of a gym, and the abandonment of an entire neighbor. With some love, there was no doubt that this part of the city could be restored to its former glory. The problem was finding someone who would be willing to put in the effort.
Which would come first: a neighborhood renovation or a new gym leader? Kane stood on the stoop of the massive building, staring up at a shattered window and the mold-covered sign. After the death of the last gym leader -- Kane's own father -- no one had dared take up the mantel, either out of respect for the dead or fear of the place's dark history. At least, that was the excuse people used at first. Time had a funny way of erasing history and making people forget. There were plenty of eager trainers in the city who were unaware of why the gym was now without a leader; the most glaring issue now was the price tag. No one had been willing to dole out money to fix it up.
