If Kane's bitter experience with alpha Pokémon in the past had taught him anything, it was that they were usually unreasonable and beyond any hope of befriending, especially if they were already agitated. The only surefire way to deal with a hostile alpha was to battle them, prove one's worth in combat, and either cause said Pokémon to flee or faint. Though most Rangers prided themself on resolving issues peacefully, their number one responsibility was to ensure the safety of citizens and to maintain harmony between nature and civilization. The way to do that was to subdue wild Pokémon if they appeared aggressive or posed some other kind of danger. For example, an alpha Pidgey who was just defending its territory in the wilds of the forest had reason to be hostile, for it was likely just being protective of its kin. But an alpha Pidgey that launched attacks on travelers who were walking along Route 1 posed a real problem.
Then again, maybe Kane was just looking for an excuse to do something other than walking and paroling, allowing the boredom to make his brain go numb in doing. Maybe, deep down, he was looking for a distraction, and the naughty Pidgey perched on the nearby branch proved to be an excellent one. With little warning, it swooped down as Kane continued walking along the path, obviously hoping to get a hit in with its talons. The young Ranger was well-prepared, however, for he had spotted the creature before it even decided to attack, and so he was able to stumble out of the way just in time. Without a moment's hesitation, he summoned Pan and instantly told the Panpour to use Leer against the alpha Pidgey.
As the massive bird made a U-turn in the air and came back for a follow-up attack, it spotted Pan's glare, seemed to hesitate for only a moment, then followed through with its Brave Bird attack. As it zipped by, Pan was able to get in a well-placed Scratch, but the Panpour was clearly hurting from the blow it had taken. "Hang in there," Kane encouraged, and his partner chittered in response. Unfortunately for them, the battle was far from over. Not only did the alpha seem to still have some fight left in her, but two other Pidgeys emerged from the canopy and began flying in a circle overhead. "Shoot... That's not good," the novice Ranger huffed as his gaze shifted between the three assailants. Without thinking -- without considering how it may impact the tide of the battle or how it would effect any of the wild Pokémon's emotions -- Kane threw a Pokéball at the alpha.

The ball fell from the sky and landed on the road a few feet away. Kane held his breath as it twitched a few times before finally growing still, the light fading from red to grey as the Pidgey rested within... Unbelieable. Not only had he managed to catch a wild Pokémon without whittling down it health very much, but he also managed to successfully catch a high level alpha! Kane walked over to the stationary Pokéball, picked it up, and twirled the red-and-blue device in his hand. It was just Pidgey, but he still felt proud of himself. Luck certainly played a role, but Kane had no doubt the Pidgey could have broken free if she really wanted to. The question was, why didn't she? The feeling of talons ruffling his hair caused the young trainer to turn and see that the other two Pidgeys were dive-bombing him, clearly bothered by the fact that he had so unceremoniously captured their leader. Kane used one hand to shield his head while simultaneously calling out his newly-captured Pokémon. If it was a double battle they wanted then it was a double battle they would get. Two huge -- albeit injured -- Pokémon against two average, healthy Pidgeys. Kane and Pan were feeling pumped and ready to go, but the alpha seemed to have other plans in mind. The moment she was out of her Pokéball, the other two avians stopped their assault. The largest of the three whistled and tweeted, and Pan relaxed some in response to whatever the birds were saying to one another. Kane guessed the alpha was telling her flock that she had been captured fair and square... that they didn't need to defend her any more because she was going to leave with her new trainer. At least, that's what he hoped she was saying. bCr198ypp_ (a roll to see how the Pidgeys react)
Ultimately, Kane couldn't know what was discussed, but whatever was said only seemed to frustrate and upset the other two Pidgeys even more than they already were. The non-shiny one tackled the alpha in mid-air, which caused the massive avian to lose some altitude. "Watch out!" Kane shouted as the shiny bird tried to swoop in to land a second hit. The alpha moved in time with the Ranger's exclamation and managed to narrowly avoid getting struck. To put some distance between herself and her old flock members, the huge Pidgey flew down and landed beside Pan. "Glad to have you on our side," Kane said.
Before he could say anything more, however, the alpha was in the air again, zipping around in circles and dive-bombing the other Pidgeys. "Reckless," Kane huffed before turning his attention to Pan. "Go help. Use Leer and Play Nice to lower their defenses." And with that, the Panpour did as he was told. He hooted and hollered to get a Pidgey's attention, acted cute and innocent or glared with a look that could kill, and while said Pidgey was distracted, the alpha seized the opportunity to fly in and land a solid Tackle or Gust. With Kane watching from the sidelines and alerting both his Pokémon about incoming attacks, they were able to carefully and masterfully maneuver the battlefield.
When both Pidgeys looked like they were starting to lose the power to fight, Kane threw out two more Pokéballs, hoping he would have the same good fortune that had allowed him to catch the alpha moments earlier.

While the standard-colored Pidgey masterfully avoided being hit by a Pokéball, the shiny one was less fortunate. It was reduced to a red beam of light which was then captured inside the second ball; however, in only a matter of seconds, it broke free and fluttered hurriedly after its flock-mate. The two wild Pidgeys took to the skies, flying in a north-eastward direction and instantly bringing the encounter to an end as they fled from combat. "That's that," Kane said as he walked along the path to collect the two empty Pokéballs. He examined them a moment to ensure they were still usable before slipping them back into his bag and turning to face his Pokémon. "You two did... very..." his voice trailed as his eyes locked onto Pan.
Only Pan. "Where's Pidgey?" The aquatic primate turned and pointed to the sky off to the north-east. Hovering in the air, aggressively squawking after the other two Pidgeys, was the alpha avian. "Hey!" Kane hollered. The bird didn't respond, it just kept screeching after its old flock members. The novice Ranger cupped his hands around his mouth and tried again. "Hey, Pidgey!" That seemed to do it, for the bird stopped screaming, casually glided back to her new team, and landed beside Pan in the road.
"I feel like I need to apologize... for capturing you," Kane began, looking a little nervous and feeling even more silly for apologizing to a Pokémon. Yes, they were more intelligent than regular animals, but not by much. Would the Pidgey even realize what he was trying to say? Either way, it made a light trilling sound and flapped a wing dismissively. Kane had no idea what this meant, but it didn't seem like the ex-alpha was mad about the way things had gone down. "I'm glad-- We're glad to have you on the team. You're a strong fighter." The Pidgey beamed with pride and Pan grunted a little, looking up at the novice Ranger with sad eyes.
"You are too, Pan. You both fought really well together... but maybe we can work on not rushing head-first into battle next time," he said while eyeing the avian. "Teamwork's important. I know you're used to doing things your own way, but that won't work anymore. We can't just rush in to attack everything we come across. Peace is our goal. So we need to trust each other, okay?" The Pidgey chirped and flapped her wings, seemingly in approval, and Pan echoed the sentiment with a smile and hoot. "Glad to hear it! Now rest easy. We'll almost back in Cerise City," Kane said as he stood and returned the Pokémon to their balls.
He took a moment to hold the Pokéballs close to his heart before clipping them to his belt and continuing down Route 1.
