March meant that the racing preseason was starting soon. While Josh had several Pokémon he could compete with, he hadn't brought over his main racing squad immediately due to regional regulations. Though their paperwork was already filled out and submitted, it would take weeks for them to clear customs. He needed a backup, and one that was controllable at that. Inky would be a good one; the Glaceon's claws were designed to grip icy surfaces...or any form of solid ground, for that matter. The other would be his Charmeleon, Ares. The fire-type was an extremely unusual choice for racing, despite how common Charizard were for aerial contests of speed.
By this time of year, the outdoor courses had thawed to the point where they had reopened. And if there was any ice left, Ares' tail would melt it; he was trying to keep Josh warm by swinging his tail around as the two walked toward one of the practice courses' starting lines. Inky didn't appreciate it too much, giving the oddly-saddled Charmeleon a glare before trotting as far away as possible while remaining on the path. Once the two were just behind the starting line and faced westward on the rectangular course, Josh gently kicked at Inky's sides, the energetic Glaceon bursting off the line into a quick gallop.

As Josh tried to correct his trajectory after drifting toward the outside, he had to lean back the other direction after nearly crashing into the inside wall. Inky turned well--so well that she could probably perform sharp donuts on a frozen surface if she wanted! He put it to the test, guiding the ice-type beneath him to the outside of the course before sharply leaning in the opposite direction. Ice formed beneath Inky's paws as he drifted in a tight, full circle around the wide corner before taking off toward the next right-angle turn. Josh couldn't help but let out a whoop, adrenaline pumping from the quick turn! This would take a lot of getting used to.
Sometimes he wondered whether he was training his Pokémon, or they were training him. Both of them needed to be in top shape to be able to compete well and get into the semi-pro Gold League, the minor leagues of professional Pokémon racing. It only took Josh two more corners to get used to turning Inky before he was able to guide him into cresting the right-angle turn's apex. Ares gleefully trotted onto the track, eagerly awaiting his turn...
