After taking a couple days off to recover from the bitter battle with the giant Charmeleon, Josh headed to the far north end of Russetton, where the Gym awaited. It was by far the largest building in the city, and one of the few modern-looking buildings...even if it was relatively simple for a Pokémon Gym. It had only the bare necessities for a Gym - a lobby, an office, two locker rooms, and a few arenas for battles to happen in. As he sat down to fill out the application paperwork, he received a text message from the Gym.
Due to a conflict, your appointment with Leader Ronin Yokoi bas been rescheduled from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM. If you need to reschedule your appointment, please reply to this message with 170929 and we will return your call as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience.Josh scowled briefly in disgust. "Maaaaaaan am I going to be hungry after this," he mused aloud, heading over to a public terminal to adjust his Pokémon team. "King of the Ring, huh? With a bunch of Ground Pokémon, I won't be able to use my usual squad, either. This should be...fun." He juggled filling out his application and accessing the computer system, which had very slow internet due to the city's remote location. He was used to fiber internet back in Goldenrod. Ultimately, he decided on three newcomers to the squad before logging out and turning his paperwork in to the front desk. Unfortunately, a little over an hour would not be enough time to get food, eat, and come back, what with the lack of fast food on the north side of town... --- {WC: 288} {PC: 1} Number of Pokémon: 3 Format: Single

A small crowd greeted Josh in the stands surrounding the metal fence that served as the battleground's enclosure. It even had a state-of-the-art, digital scoreboard that updated itself in real time with every blow the Pokémon landed. Technology was such a marvelous thing; he pondered for a bit how it could possibly work before shaking his head and getting back to the Gym challenge at hand. From the Leader's lean but muscular build, he certainly lived up to Josh's expectations. Looking at his gi and the marks on his black belt, the martial arts skill this trainer had exceeded even Leader Chuck's back in his home region!
The Leader was kind enough to introduce himself, so Josh did as well. "Tell me about it. My favorite Pokémon wound up on the DL because of it. I'm Josh, a Pokémon racer, and beating you will be my first step to getting into the Ageos League! You have the attitude of another Gym Leader from Johto; I challenged Chuck and beat him handily when I was trying to qualify for the Johto League. I'm confident this will be a repeat performance."
The arena was designed to press Ronin's advantage of close quarters combat as much as possible. He knew the arena would be small, but not this small. Meteos would be fairly constrained, and would not be able to fly out of the way of some Ground-type attacks completely. Therefore, he decided to leave Meteos as his anchor, instead clutching Pinky's Poké Ball in his right hand. The two trainers' platforms elevated above the ring, though to only half the height of a standard Pokémon League trainer's platform. "Let's start off strong, Pinky!" When prompted, he sent the Sylveon's Poké Ball sailing through the air and into the caged arena below.

The moment the two Poké Balls contacted the mesh, the Pokémon contained within emerged; Pinky on the south side, Ronin's Makuhita on the north side. "Begin!" the match's head judge shouted, a whistle or two coming from the small audience. The Makuhita simply put up its dukes and waited for Pinky to make the first move.
"Letting me set the pace of battle was a mistake," Josh smiled. "Because with me, there's only one pace, and that's fast!" He pointed his right index finger at the fighting-type. "You know what to do!" The Sylveon cleared his throat before starting to sing a hymn, though only three notes came out of its mouth before Ronin's Pokémon lunged at the fairy-type, socking it with a quick right jab that ended the verse, but did almost no harm to him.
A bit rattled by the speed of the Pokémon's attack, Pinky stepped back and continued his hymn, its notes lulling all who could hear into dropping their guard and admiring how majestic it was. All except Makuhita, that is--the fighting-type lurched backward, head-in-hands as the hymn rang in its head like nails on a chalkboard.
A loud, martial arts-like cry from Ronin snapped his Makuhita out of it. "You didn't think I came prepared for this?" he quipped back at Josh, a louder cheer coming from the Leader's side of the gallery. "Makuhita, Poison Jab!" The fairy-type flinched, flinging its glowing feelers at his foe to try blinding the foe, but it was too late - Ronin's Pokémon had landed a strong left uppercut, its glove coated with a colorless toxin that dripped down Pinky's neck. Josh took a quick glance at the scoreboard; while it wasn't looking pretty, it appeared he was ahead for now.
"Keep going, Pinky! You got this!" Josh raised a fist into the air to try to encourage his dizzy Pokémon. Sweating profusely from his body temperature rising due to fighting the venom's effects, the Sylveon sat down before clearing his throat and resuming his disarming hymn. It did not sound majestic or pretty at all, laced with cracks from the Pokémon's worn-out voice. After the third crack, even Josh had to cover his ears. Was this what it sounded like to the Makuhita? It must have been something truly awful, as it made the Makuhita dizzy with a migraine. The fighting-type swayed as though it were drunk, its head in its gloves until it could do so no more, its chin meeting the dirt below.
"Makuhita is unable to battle," the head judge announced, holding up a small, red flag. "Sylveon is the winner."
The round's victor smiled weakly as Josh got the audience going with a big fist-pump. The fairy-type wouldn't last too much longer, though, and that was his strongest Pokémon against Ronin. He debated withdrawing Pinky and giving him a rest, but ultimately decided against it, crossing his arms. "Next!" he taunted, a big grin on his face with confidence running high.

Josh's confidence was rattled a little bit when Ronin released his second Pokémon: a Golurk whose yellow eyes flickered like strobe lights upon being released. With it being a phantom automoton, direct attacks were out of the question, leaving the Sylveon with only his voice to fight with. Though the fairy-type's song briefly made the Golurk drop its guard, a sharp cry from its trainer made the floating Pokémon snap out of it quickly, rising all the way up to the top of the cage. Once it had reached the top, all of its lights faded. By the time Josh could react, the ghost-type was already falling. Even if Josh could react faster than the half-second it took for the Golurk to crash to the ground, there was no way Pinky could react to his command in time to jump out of the way.
CRASH!
The force of the shaking ground threw Josh to one side of his trainer's box - thankfully there were bars and rails protecting him, or that would not have been a pleasant fall! It quickly became apparent from the length of the attack that even if he could have reacted in time, the sheer length of the Earthquake would have outlaster Pinky's airtime. The shaking ground lifted the Sylveon into the air at an odd angle, Golurk taking the opportunity to thrust its chest toward the helpless foe. The impact was...not pretty, to say the least.
"Sylveon is unable to battle. Golett is the winner!" the head judge called as the Leader had tied the match at one knockout each. Josh sighed as he silently released Meteos from the second Poké Ball, aiming for the opposite corner of the cage to allow the Aerodactyl as much room as possible in the confined quarters.

Meteos' battle conditions were far from ideal; the flying dinosaur had to latch onto the cage's mesh and push off from it to get enough speed to maintain its aerial advantage. Josh had already seen Earthquake attacks from this Golett; if Meteos let his guard down even once and landed on the soft ground below the cage, the shaking earth would fracture and ultimately shatter his rock skin, fossilizing him a second time. Josh could not allow that to happen - not after all the time and money he had sunk into such a rare and speedy aerial hunter.
All of Golett's flashing lights appeared to be weak points - ones Josh was quick to have Meteos exploit. "Meteos, crush it in your jaws! Aim for the blinking lights!" he shouted, the rock-type seemingly teleporting around and onto the Golett with how fast his charge was. The sound of two different kinds of sturdy, hard rock grinding against each other made Josh cover his ears. Even with his ears covered, a loud popping noise made him flinch; shards flew from the insignia on the Golett's chest, all of the yellow lights flickered like strobe lights. The dinosaur's serrated and strong jaws landed a bitter blow! "Awesome job, Meteos! Now shatter the ones on its head next!" Josh cried, the tide of battle shifting in his favor...
"Golett, use Phantom Force!" Ronin shouted, the audience awed by his ingenuity. Just as Meteos started to take a vicegrip-like hold on the ground-type's head, it vanished from sight entirely, Josh's Pokémon reeling from jaws snapping together with almost all the strength he possessed. With Golett having vanished, nothing was holding Meteos up. Gravity took over, the Aerodactyl crashing to the ground back-first! Landing in such a way made Meteos rock his frame back and forth to right itself, but it wouldn't be nearly fast enough to dodge the Phantom Force attack.
"Watch out behind you!" Josh shouted as Meteos slowly started to right himself, latching onto the thick, foundational poles to help him stand back up.
"Who said I was aiming for your Aerodactyl directly?" Ronin taunted Josh. "Anyone more than a novice trainer, which you clearly are, would have seen this coming. I was aiming for the ground around your Aerodactyl! Now Golett, Earthquake while it's still on the ground!" The moment Josh heard the command, he braced himself by grabbing the railing on his trainer's box, keeping his feet as far from the edge as he comfortably could so one of them didn't slide between the bars. Meteos didn't have that luxury.
Emerging from the Reverse World, Ronin's Golett slammed its heavy body into the earth as hard as it could, aided by gravity. The resulting arena-altering seismic event tossed the grounded Meteos around like a play thing, cracks in its rock armor forming near critical joints. A nails-on-chalkboard screech came from the rock-type's mouth, a sign that Josh's Pokémon was desperate and in intense pain.
When Meteos saw his Poké Ball in Josh's hand, he flapped his left wing back toward his trainer; this was a sign that the Aerodactyl wanted to keep going until he could not stand the pain anymore. "Alright, if that's how you feel..." Josh put the Poké Ball away, back on the podium holding his fainted Sylveon. "Crush that Golett's lights with your jaws again!" With the two in melee range, there was very little Ronin's Pokémon could do to thwart the Aerodactyl's impressive, adrenaline-fueled reaction speed. Heightened body function from the heat of the moment was the only thing keeping him fighting at all. It was, however, enough to shatter one of the pieces of armor covering what the ghost-type used to see. Able to take no more, its light faded completely, Ronin's second Pokémon motionless as a statue.
"Golett is unable to battle. Aerodactyl is the winner," the head judge announced, Josh taking a very small lead in the match. He didn't expect Meteos to last much longer; the winged rock-type was much too tired to even fly.

Ronin looked surprised to see Josh leaving Meteos in to battle the final Pokémon; the Aerodactyl looked like he could barely stand. "You should learn to treat your Pokémon better," Ronin chided the challenger. "Any sensible Trainer would withdraw their Pokémon if it was in that kind of condition. This is barbaric. Call off your Aerodactyl," he continued as he released his final Pokémon, an immobile yet powerful Stunfisk.
Josh was one to see through such a ruse; from his perspective, a battle this close could be decided by small advantages. He had a small advantage, and he was going to press it as much as he could. "Normally, I would agree with you, Sensei Yokoi," the racer started to retort. "But what if calling off Meteos goes directly against the line I see to victory?" Even one of the side judges shifted an eye toward the challenger. "There's a line to victory, and I gotta follow it. It may not be a great line, but it's the best I have. Meteos, aim your Supersonic at Stunfisk!"
The rock-skinned Pokémon turned toward the Leader's anchor, the injured Pokémon's jaws wide open as it screeched intensely toward Stunfish. "Focus, Stunfisk!" Squinting, the electric-type's vision swayed to one side and back, but it managed to maintain consciousness and control of its senses. "Now, use Electroweb!"
A grid of electric currents rose from Stunfisk's center, expanded across the width of the cage, then started slowly moving along the cage's length toward the Aerodactyl. Josh's partner instinctively backed up until he ran out of room, but the Trainer knew this was only delaying the inevitable. The surge collided with his Aerodactyl, the valiant fighter letting out an unearthly, agonizing screech before hitting the ground with a loud thud.
"Aerodactyl is unable to battle. Stunfisk is the winner," the head judge announced as both sides were down to one last Pokémon. Both were at full strength. Without delay, Josh released his final Pokémon, Illumina, into the cage below. Both had very effective means of attacking each other; it was simply a matter of who had the speed to strike first or the endurance to outlast the other.

His gambit with Meteos having failed, the doors to victory were rapidly closing...but while there was an opening at all, he wasn't giving up. "Illumina, use your Supersonic!" The screeching noise, combined with the Chinchou's strobing feelers, greatly disoriented its electric-type opponent. "Now, Bubble Beam and hold it!"
Ronin screamed for his Pokémon, letting out another martial arts-esque war cry. A second, even. With auditory and visual senses overloaded, and now inundated with water thanks to the Chinchou's Bubble Beam attack, it simply could hear the Leader. "No...!" The bubble holding Stunfisk popped when it reached the cage ceiling, sending the waterlogged Pokémon crashing to the now-muddy floor. The ground began rattling as the barely-conscious Stunfisk attempted to further liquify the dirt via Earthquake, but could not manage more than a moderate tremor before closing its eyes and becoming motionless.
"Stunfisk is unable to battle. Challenger Devlin wins the match!" the head judge announced the match results as the Leader's side of the scoreboard showed all zeroes.
The only words that came out of a Josh overcome with emotion were, "Never...give...up!"
