Having submitted his certfications for Blinky and Twilight, Josh let out three of his four Pokémon, making sure to keep the combat-thirsty Skarmory in her Poké Ball while they were in city limits. From the moment she jumped out of her Poké Ball, the electric fox was running circles around an annoyed-looking Absol. Given how stoic she usually was, that was saying something. "I know you're excited, but can you calm down for a bit?" She did as asked, though she was still bouncing up and down even when still. "There's supposedly a desert town where it'll be nice and warm. Maybe we can spend the winter there. Beats freezing our butts off in the snow that's coming!" Ixion let out a whinny, Blinky let out a bark, and Twilight remained silent. "It's a bit of a long road, but it shouldn't take too long for you to get there! Don't forget to pace yourselves - let me know if you need a rest and we can make camp." All three nodded in understanding.
With that, Josh mounted up atop Blinky, his hair standing on end from the static surrounding the electric ride's fur. Donning a pair of gloves to avoid spiking his hands against the bristled, yellow fur, he leaned into the wind and jabbed his knees into the Jolteon's sides. She bolted southwest, Josh more comfortable than on the track, as she could run in a mostly straight line along the Roch River's northwest bank. "Wahoo!" he couldn't help but whoop as the shrubby grasses on his right flew by. Ixion's mane flared up, the fire-type sounding a loud cry and entering a swift gallop to run alongside the barely-trying Jolteon. Twilight had to perform Quick Attacks just to keep up.

As the road became less of a straight line, curving around the riverfront, Josh was forced to slow Blinky down. While the river wasn't frozen, that water would be cold...and with no water Pokémon on his team yet, he didn't want to think of the consequences. Tugging back hard on the reins, Josh did his best to kill his Jolteon's speed as quickly as he could. With her being bred for drag racing instead of Federation racing, though, it would take several slides along somewhat sharper curves, as well as simply letting friction sap her momentum. The process of slowing the Jolteon to a stop also let Ixion and Twilight catch their breath, especially the Dark-type. The equine was still full of energy, as was Blinky.
Near the riverfront, there was a beautifully-dressed woman that asked Josh for a quick, one-on-one battle. He accepted the offer, the female starting by calling on her Roselia to battle. While Josh was deciding on what Pokémon to use, the grass-type took the initative to Grow in size. It was going to continue to do this. He had to decide now. "...Ixion! Run it over with your--" Josh was about to command, when the remaining Poké Ball at his waist started violently shaking. Bladestorm emerged from her Poké Ball after her shaking caused the release switch to go off, the metal bird rocketing toward the Roselia beak-first like a living missile. Not too many things spooked Ixion, but that sure did - she reared up high and galloped far behind the rest of the racer's squad.
While the Roselia bravely defended himself with a timely Mega Drain before Bladestorm could fully fly away, his trainer was simply terrified. Josh reached for his Poké Ball to call off the horribly lopsided battle, but the avian predator would not listen. It took several attempt for the red beam to connect, and by then, the Roselia was stuck on Bladestorm's beak, squirming and squealing as though his life depended on it. "I'm so sorry!" Josh shouted, apologizing profusely. "She wasn't supposed to battle your Roselia! Here, let me fix your Pokémon up." He sprayed both of the grass-type's beak wounds with Potion, hoping the medicine would be enough. Even after that, all he got was an incomprehensible scolding. There was nothing Josh could do to make this woman happy; he simply apologized again before Blinky cantered further southwest.

Blinky's canter got faster the further south the two went, the temperature slowly getting warmer as foliage grew progressively more shrubby. The dirt trail kicked up by the Jolteon's legs grew larger as the conditions grew drier. Over the roaring winds from the speed his mount was achieving, Josh could barely hear what sounded like a stringed instrument being played. He gradually had Blinky slow to a brisk trot to investigate. There was a Kricketot singing in the middle of the road, and the sound was driving Twilight insane! "I really don't want to do this, but...Ixion, run it down," Josh commanded, pointing toward the wild.
The fire-laden equine's hooves clacked more rapidly against the dry road, accelerating into the larger-than-life bug-type only at Josh's command, and with significantly less speed than he expected. Kricketot's tunes were known to influence the tide of battle, but it was one thing knowing about it and another...well, hearing it firsthand. Seeing there was no way to truly stop the Ponyta's charges, the wild braced itself against further attacks, Biding its time and energy together for a potentially deadly counterattack.
While the battle continued on, Bladestorm's Poké Ball was shaking again. "I told you, this isn't your fight!" Josh scolded his Pokémon, holding the steel-type's capsule with the release button directly away from him. He rolled his eyes when he heard pounding noises from the inside - Bladestorm was pecking at the transparent upper half of her Poké Ball from the inside. While he knew it was futile to do so, he couldn't help but be frustrated with his Pokémon's behavior. Hopefully, it was just part of a youth phase for the Skarmory.
While Josh was so distracted, the struggle between Ixion and the Kricketot escalated in a way he did not foresee - the Kricketot reciprocated the force of Ixion's three charges at double the force! The only thing that kept her from fainting on the spot was holding back her full speed, whether willful or not! Ixion was struggling to stay standing, dizzy from the power of three of her own ramming attacks hitting her all at once. While she didn't collapse on the spot, Josh had seen enough. He clicked the switch on Bladestorm's Poké Ball, who was more than happy to shoot off after the bug-type and snatch it between the two plates of her beak. A chill went down Josh's spine as his avian partner flung the Kricketot around like a play thing before throwing it across the river, the victim of her entertainment splashing in the shallows near the opposite bank. Shaking his head, Josh recalled both Pokémon, bewildered at how he was going to get the Skarmory trained to behave around people.

Bladestorm ended up being the least of Josh's worries, though; not one moment sooner than he issued the command for Blinky to continue southwest, a large horde of angry-looking Oricorio waved their pom-poms at him. The lead Oricorio, a petit Psychic-type, pranced back and forth, summoning a fierce tailwind that caused Blinky to rear higher than Josh thought possible, the cocoon saddle she wore the only thing keeping Josh aboard. Catching his breath, Josh quickly loosed the straps that kept his legs held fast to his mount, so he could dismount in the dire case Blinky had to fight. He sent Bladestorm and Twilight back out, knowing not to leave the weary Ixion vulnerable to further attack.
With the fierce wind at their backs, the Oricorio all dogpiled Twilight. She let out a pained cry as all five of them socked her, a diving Peck from Bladestorm the only reason her forehead blade was at all effective against them. The just-hatched psychic-type collapsed from a single Quick Attack, the Absol bringing the ghost-type cheerleader to its knees and causing it to start limping away from the pack.
The newborns badly injured only drove the wilds to greater rage, unleashing a flurry of pecks that brought Twilight down very quickly. The only lasting blow was a follow-up Quick Attack against the electric-type Oricorio; while Absol were strong, few Pokémon could withstand even that many weak attacks at once. The remaining three Oricorio pounded away at Bladestorm's armor with every diving loop she made, taking down one of the Psychic-types after a long battle. Seeing how poorly things were going, Josh looped the external straps on Blinky's saddle back into place. "We gotta make a break for it! Return, both of you!" Josh shouted, recalling both his Pokémon.
The horde, still a distance from Blinky and Josh, turned and began to charge him. "We're gonna jump over them, okay?" THe Jolteon let out a loud, crackle-like bark. She rubbed her front-right paw against the ground and took a deep breath. "Now!" Josh cried, slamming his heels into his mount's sides. Blinky accelerated so fast that Josh couldn't help but let out a loud grunt as the force pushed him about. When it looked like the Pokémon were about to collide, Josh flicked the reins as hard as he could; when the pulse reached the sides of Blinky's head, she sprung into the air with a leap that easily cleared the Oricorio. He rapidly left the remainder of the wilds in the dust, hoping superior speed would be enough to lose them and get a chance to treat Ixion's wounds...

Blinky's breath grew noticeably heavier after dashing away from the four remaining Oricorio at high speeds; Josh's was, as well. Just from watching a high speed Pokémon chase, one would think only the Pokémon would be worn out from their exertion. That is far from the case, at least without extensive training. "Phew! That's what the offseason will do to you," Josh sighed, loosing the straps holding his legs fast to the giant electric-type. He carefully found a flat spot on the Jolteon's head to pat her on the head for a job well done before dismounting somewhat dizzily, at last getting an opportunity to treat Ixion's wounds with tried-and-true medicine.
The fire-type smiled after the medicine had taken effect. While full relief of course would not be immediate, she was more energetic than when she was hurt. Not unexpected. Ixion's insistence that she was okay to carry him along the rest of the riverside path was enough to convince him to climb back aboard, Blinky happily trotting alongside the Ponyta as the three continued on.
As conditions got noticeably warmer, both from heading south toward more arid land and simply due to the sun growing higher in the sky, Josh's eyes lit up when he saw an enormous Eevee that stared Blinky down aggressively. Blinky tried scaring the Eevee off by flourishing her long claws, but all that served to do was goad the Eevee into charging her. Ixion ran toward the side of the road, giving the two plenty of room to duke it out. "Use your Thundershock only!" Josh commanded.
Blinky didn't need to be told that - she hated fighting, but this wild Pokémon forced the issue. Her fur crackled with sparks, loosing Thundershock attacks to try to keep the wild away. Though she had a serious agility advantage, Eevee were rather nimble on their own, the wild showcasing that by grazing one electric blast. Blinky had led it into a second, though, but not before the Eevee reached melee range. The Normal-type rammed Blinky down, snatching away a Pecha Berry tucked in her fur!
Noticing her snack was gone drove the Jolteon to turn up the voltage, spamming small electric discharges to trap the thief. Before the battle escalated any further, Josh took out a Great Ball and tossed it at the aggressive wild - it looked like one more of those ramming, snatching attacks would be enough to fell his prized racing Pokémon and leave him one bad run-in from being stranded on the road!

Phew! The capture was successful, which allowed Josh to breathe a sigh of relief for multiple reasons. First, he had bagged this Eevee - that would be another racing Eeveelution. Once Clyde cleared customs, that would be his full squad of four. His current team suffered a lot for the capture, though - none of them were in very good shape. While Bladestorm wasn't badly hurt, she had collapsed from exhaustion and wasn't coming out of her Poké Ball any time soon. Not without some Ether, anyway, and that stuff was hard to get. Twilight was just plain ol' wounded, having been dogpiled by multiple Oricorio. This left one Pokémon for transport, and one for battle.
"Oh, those wounds do not look good," Josh remarked when he saw the Jolteon's right side. "Let's fix you up before we get too far down the road." He procured another Potion from his backpack, spraying down the bruises beneath the electric-type's quills. The wounds weren't nearly as severe as Ixion's, but they still needed to be treated in case of a wild Pokémon ambush. While both of them were still sore, Ixion was less so. The racer climbed back into the Ponyta's saddle and coaxed her to a relaxing, but still swift, canter, Blinky easily able to keep pace. Josh kept a close watch on two Psyduck near the river's shore, each of them giving him a blank stare. While it was hard to tell whether they were hostile or not, they seemed to give the fast Pokémon a wide berth. Not that it mattered - the real threat from Psyduck were all ranged attacks to begin with.

The dense, green grasses slowly grew more yellow the farther south Ixion cantered, and the fewer trees there were - a sign that the two were going to reach some rather arid environments soon. Josh's supply of water was good, and he no longer had to worry about it freezing, what with how far south he had traveled. The river's current increased as it rose up to the highlands to the east. Farther southwest, the road was a lot more rugged, being more an uneven canyon than a dirt road passing south of the Whitecap Mountains. Even Blinky had to slow down and start watching her step; Josh tugged back gently to signal to the fire-type to slow down a little bit.
At the road's final turn to the west, a Happiny stood near the corner. What a find! These Pokémon were very rare in Johto and Kanto, and there was even a regional law making it illegal for anyone except breeders and medical workers to own them. Not in Ageos, though; at least not to his knowledge. Though he was trying to save his lone Quick Ball for an emergency, this was too good of an opportunity not to pass up. With no desire to have his two remaining Pokémon battle, he lobbed the blue-and-yellow Poké Ball at the egg-bearing Normal-type.

Click. The Happiny settled into the Quick Ball with little resistance at all. "Hey Blinky, could you get that Poké Ball for me?" The Jolteon chomped down on the circular device and tossed it up to Josh with reasonable accuracy; he did have to make the catch with his off hand, but he made it nonetheless. "Not the greatest throw, though..." he teased his partner, who promptly ignored him as a small campground came into view when the grasses started to give way to pebbles and cracked, dry earth. "Hey, we're halfway to Russetton!" Josh announced. Blinky hopping up and down a few times in excitement. He was glad he wasn't riding his Jolteon instead of Ixion - that would be jarring to be on!
The campground wasn't too full, either - only a single tent was pitched, and it was nearly dusk. Josh dismounted and recalled a yawning Ixion, leaving the energetic electric-type as company while he set up a small tent for one. "Once we can get south of here, supposedly it opens up a lot. Then you'll be able to run a lot more freely, girl," the trainer was sweet-talking the excited, almost needy Jolteon. She let out a bark of approval as her partner continued erecting the tent, the two ready to turn in once the sun had fully set.
