When Kane received the task to deal with a small swarm of Zubat that had somehow found its way in a residential home, he was thrilled. Since becoming a Ranger, he'd been mostly on standby, serving as nothing more than a gofer for the more elite members of the Cerise City squad. Heck, he'd barely even had any time to train with his new Panpour! The higher ups kept him busy with rather trivial tasks, such as doing their laundry, getting them coffee, and taking calls alongside the professional operators. And when he wasn't on the job, he was too exhausted to anything else. Long story short, it wasn't exactly what he had signed up for.
Fortunately for Kane, the hazing seemed to be slowing down and he was being trusted with more respectable jobs: patrolling the streets, taking citizens' statements when they had a complaint about a stray Pokémon, and now actually going out to deal with a problem first-hand! No shadowing some veteran, either. He was being trusted to deal with the Zubat in the attic by himself. Though the job in question wasn't quite as thrilling at putting out fires or fighting off rampaging Tauros, it was a step in the right direction. Plus, given his partner's low level, something like pest control was probably more their speed anyway.
With jacket on and the utility belt secure, Kane headed out. He knew his way around the city, and so it only took him a matter of minutes to travel from the Ranger Station to the residential address. Before he could even knock on the door, it swung open, revealing a slightly overweight woman with frizzy silver hair and a flashlight in her hands. Kane managed a smile. "Good evening, ma'am. I'm with the--"
"You're here to take care of those blasted Zubat?" she asked, her voice shrill and somewhat accusatory.
Kane nodded. "Yes, ma'am. I--"
Again he was interrupted when the woman turned and shouted to someone from inside the house. "Yeah, it's a Ranger!" There was a pause as another voice echoed inaudibly down the hallway. The woman shouted back, "No! Just keep it shut!" She turned back to Kane and motioned him inside. "C'mon then. Don't just stand there like a stick in the mud."
The novice Ranger bowed his head respectfully as he stepped inside the house. He barely had time to take in his surroundings before the woman closed the door and began to make her way down the nearest hallway, motioning for the white-haired man to follow. Kane stayed close by her side as she brought him to a room where a teenage boy stood on a ladder to keep an attic door shut tight. At the base of the ladder was a half empty spray bottle, a broom, and bug net. It looked as if someone had tried to deal with the Zubat problem themselves.
"There's no lock on the door?" Kane asked after taking the situation in.
The teenager opened his mouth to speak, but the woman was faster. "There was, but my fool of a husband broke the darn thing!" Kane nodded as she went on, "He said he could deal with it, but 'Oh no!' I said, 'You've done enough.' So he took FrouFrou to the Center -- she was bit by one of those varmints, and we were scared she got poisoned -- then I called you right up."
"Good thing you did. I'll take care of them for you," Kane reassured, and for the first time since the two met, the woman smiled. The novice Ranger turned back to the teenage boy and motioned for him to come down from the ladder, and he did. The small doorway in the ceiling remained shut even though no one was holding it closed, proving to Kane that there had been no need for the boy to continuously hold it shut. Then again, it was probably best that he had. There was no telling what a hungry or scared Zubat might do; and opening doors wasn't the most absurd thing a Pokémon had ever done.
Steadily, Kane pushed open the hatch with one hand, grabbed the flashlight from his belt with the other, and peered into the attic.

A random event has occurred!
It was a good thing Kane brought a flashlight - the light switch had long since rusted out and was in desperate need of a replacement! All she could hear were the chaotic wingbeats of what she presumed were a trio of Zubat flapping about in the darkness. There were a few boxes stored up here, arranged haphazardly among the holes between thick planks crossed over the attic's support boards. The support boards and the planks appeared to be the only spots that would support her weight. If in the unlikely event a battle was needed to chase these pests out, it would involve treacherous footing! Good thing Kane had Ranger training...

Upon hearing the flutter of bat wings, Kane ducked and let the hatch close a few inches. He had opened the door slowly in an attempt to prevent startling the unwanted residents, but it was all in vane. By consistently trying to rid to attic of the Zubat by themselves, the man and woman of the house had made the stray Pokémon skittish and on edge. It was foolish on Kane's part to assume that they wouldn't have reacted to the attic door opening. Without a word, the novice Ranger turned his head and listened for the noises above to subside. Once he was sure the Zubat were on the opposite side of the attic, Kane opened the hatch again, clicked on his flashlight, and stepped up. His movements were slow and deliberate. The last thing he wanted to do was upset the already frightened Zubat and cause them to attack. Instead, he kept the light down in an attempt to not disrupt the Pokémon any further. With such a limited amount of the room illuminated, there was very little Kane could make out about his surroundings. He could see that the attic was unfinished, with nothing by support beams and insulation to show for the builder's efforts. A few moving boxes sat precariously atop some of the wider beams, revealing to Kane that this room was used for nothing more than storage. By in large, it was a perfect place for a stray Pokémon to make its home -- Warm, dark, solitary. With caution, Kane crept forward onto one of the narrow support beams and used his free hand to close the attic hatch behind him. Slowly. Quietly. t9SJ9Had

Kane McAlvin A random event has occurred!CreeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeaaaak!!! The hatch clearly was very old and had a hinge that probably hadn't been replaced for a hot minute. At least Kane didn't have to look for the three pests - all of them were now swarming him! He could have sworn he felt their wings rub against his neck a couple of times - gross! One of them, furiously flapping in front of him, was positively enormous. How did it get stuck in the attic to begin with? STATS

Kane grimaced at the terrible noise that the hatch made upon being closed. To make the sound stop, he shut it hurriedly, causing the creak to amplify in volume. At least it wasn't a prolonged noise now... right? That didn't matter. The damage had already been done. The fluttering of wings intensified as the Zubat swooped in to attack. Kane gasped and covered his face with both arms, causing the light of the flashlight to point off into an empty corner of the attic. He remained still as the three Pokémon circled him, occasionally rubbing their leathery bodies against his neck and hands. It was certainly an unsettling feeling, but it wasn't exactly an alarming one. It took him mere seconds to realize that the Zubat weren't actually attacking. Not yet. They were just trying to scary him and get him to leave the attic. Upon realizing this, Kane kept one arm over his face for protection while using the other to cast the flashlight beam at his assailants. With any luck, the light would startle them and cause them to back off some. Then again, there was always the possibility that it would just upset them more and they would begin to attack him -- for real this time. And it would really suck if that big one decided to take a bite out of him. To prepare for the possibility of things going sour, Kane slowly pulled his free arm away from his face and grabbed hold of the Poké Ball on his utility belt, more than ready to throw it if the Zubat swarm got aggressive in response to the light. vdM2xPxM

A random event has occurred!Once Kane pointed his flashlight at the three Zubat, two of them scattered, heading for opposite corners of the attic from what he could tell. The giant one was not happy at all, though. The blue bat flapped its wings harder than before, easily enough for the Ranger to feel the surrounding displacement of air. The alpha male lunged toward Kane's flashlight-arm with fangs wide open. If he didn't act fast, he might feel four sharp teeth against his arm...and those would not be small marks, given the Zubat was the size of a human child.

Kane reeled backwards when he saw the huge Zubat swooping in with its fangs barred.

It struck his arm, causing the flashlight to fly out of his hand and fall between two of the support beams. Fortunately, it hadn't managed to sink its teeth into his flesh, for he recoiled just in time to avoid getting injured. Kane unhooked his Poké Ball from his Ranger-issued belt and pressed the release button. With a flash of light, the ball opened and out came a massive Panpour. The water-type primate chittered and took on a defensive stance even though it couldn't see well in the dark attic. While Kane carefully crept backwards along the center beam, nearing the flashlight that was half-buried in the dusty insulation, Pan ducked to avoid the swooping Zubat and swatted a paw through the air in a feeble attempt to scratch the assailant. "Pan!" Kane hollered upon seeing this act of hostility in the dim light, "Play Nice." Within seconds, the aggressive noise coming from the Panpour turned into eager hooting instead. Pan lowered his hand and hopped a few times atop the wooden beam he was balanced on -- a display that showed other Pokémon that he meant no harm and just wanted to play. With any luck, the Zubat would take the hint and stop trying to hurt them.

A random event has occurred!
The alpha Zubat seemed not to be interested in playing at all; about the only fortunate thing that happened was Pan distracting the Zubat long enough for Kane to retrieve the his dropped flashlight. It came at a cost, though - he felt a pinching, then piercing, feeling on the same arm. It didn't sting too badly for now, but that arm might feel heavy long after the job was done. One of the smaller Zubat had briefly latched onto him before letting go and watching the alpha's fight with Pan, and Kane had lost sight of the other completely! This was not going well for the budding Ranger at all...

It seemed as though Kane had gravely misread the situation at hand. He had an inkling that the Zubat swarm would be scared and a little aggressive, but this was way more than he had been prepared to handle. The largest of the bunch, which the novice Ranger assumed was the alpha, was incredibly territorial and relentless in its attacks. Just as he grabbed hold of the flashlight, Kane felt a sharp, pinching pain on his left wrist. With a quiet curse, he recoiled and swiveled the light in the direction of his assailant in time to see one of the smaller Zubat fluttering away. There was no time to stop and examine the bite on his arm, for chaos was beginning to erupt in the attic. Confident in Pan's ability to hold off the alpha for a while -- after all, they were two huge Pokemon -- Kane kept his attention on the smaller one, which was desperately trying to get out of the blinding light. The Ranger pointed the flashlight down slightly so the Zubat was still visible as it flew around the attic, but the light hopefully wasn't as intense for the nocturnal creature. While keeping an eye on the skittish Pokémon, Kane pulled out some kibble from his belt pouch and held it out for the Zubat, hoping to appeal to the bat's stomach first and foremost. "Hey, buddy. Hey. It's okay, it's okay. I'm here to help. I'm just here to help," he continued to reassure in a quiet voice. With any luck -- not that luck had been on his side up until this point -- the Zubat swarm weren't beyond reason. Then again, Zubat weren't exactly the most intelligent species out there, so Kane's attempt to befriend one of them was a gamble. All the while, Pan was doing his best to navigate the awkward terrain while dodging the alpha Zubat's attacks and trying to swat the large creature out of the air. Though his trainer had commanded him to use the move Play Nice, it was difficult to keep up the act when the opponent was so intent on causing harm. Without Kane actively and continuously barking orders to keep things on track, Pan had once again resorted to using Scratch. He had managed to get in a few hits, but those only served to infuriate the alpha Zubat even more. It moved in a blur, dive-bombing the hapless monkey one too many times. Frustrated by how the battle was turning out and unsure how to continue, Pan bared his fangs and screeched at the alpha. Kane, a short distance away, winced at the sound and commanded the Panpour to " Play Nice" before continuing his attempt at sweet-talking the smaller Zubat. NFXMu4My

A random event has occurred!
At first, the alpha Zubat briefly stopped as it watched the Spray Pokemon hopped around beams and offered to play with him. It seemed to relent, but it just responded with an attempted bite towards the water monkey. As for the budding Ranger, the other Zubat came down on his hand as if it listened to him. Yet as it bit down on the kibble, it also ended up biting his whole hand. Maybe befriending a bunch of bats were a bit difficult after all...

Things were not going well. Then again, things could have been a lot worse too. On the positive side, Kane's attempts to befriend the smaller Zubat appeared to be somewhat successful. Yes, it bit him, but its fangs only sunk into his padded glove rather than his actual skin. And thank Arceus for that. The bite wound on his wrist was already starting to tingle, so another bite would have been bad news. There was a high possibility that things would turn sour again and he would have to deal with more injuries, but if he could at least befriend this one Zubat, Kane knew he'd feel better about the entire situation. For that reason, he chose to believe that the Zubat's second bite it was merely an accident, for the low level Pokémon remained perched on his hand, seemingly unintimidated by the Ranger. "That's it," Kane cooed, "You're alright." He pulled out more kibble and dropped them into his open palm, urging the small bat to keep eating. Pan, meanwhile, was having a worse time. Play Nice wasn't appearing to have any effect, and so the Panpour made an executive decision. When the massive alpha Zubat made a U-turn in midair and attempted to attack, Pan bared his fangs, leaped into the air, and scratched its fleshy body with his claws. A critical hit! The nocturnal creature wavered as it flew then screeched out in anger and pain as it ascended, turned, and swooped down again. Pan prepared another attack but was instantly disoriented when the Zubat began to scream, launching a Supersonic attack. The room began to spin, and Pan wobbled unsteadily on the beam he was perched atop. This left him wide open for a follow-up attack -- namely, Absorb. As the Zubat's fangs sunk into Pan's body, the primate let out a howl and attempted to Scratch his opponent. Unfortunately, by the time he swung his arm, the Zubat had already pulled away, causing Pan to strike himself in the face. glZDIbsS

A random event has occurred!
Pan was not having a good time. Not only the alpha Zubat dodged his Scratch, but it started laughing at his misery and his literal Confusion before it started flying away. As for Kane, the little Zubat noticed more kibble on his palm and started to enjoy. But all of the sudden, the normal-sized Zubat from before appeared and smack onto the poor Ranger's face, scaring the little Zubat as it started flying away as well. You might want to act fast if you don't want to lose the little Zubat or your nose...

Kane closed his hand around the kibble as the tiny Zubat flew off, and he used his other hand -- which still held the flashlight -- to swat away the average sized one from his face. The largest of the three may have been beyond persuasion, but there was still hope for these two. It seemed clear to the novice Ranger that they were only acting up because their alpha was. And so, he let the little one go. There was no use chasing after it and causing it to get startled again. Plus, Kane had faith that it wouldn't try attacking him again, so he instead turned his attention to the female Zubat. She looked nervous, each flap of her wings and each swoop made with careful deliberation and self-preservation in mind. Had it tried to attack Kane because it thought the small Zubat was in danger? To prove his innocence, Kane dipped his head submissively and opened his hand to reveal the kibble again. He rolled one of the pieces between his thumb and forefinger while holding it out to the female Zubat. "It's okay, girl. I'm not going to hurt you," he whispered, hoping his slow movements, low voice, and bowed head would help her feel more comfortable with his presence. Then again, the noise happening a short distance away wasn't helping matters any. The alpha Zubat was screeching and making a clicking noise which almost sounded like a laugh, and Pan was screeching and hooting in growing frustration. The water primate shook his head and tried to focus on the dim light coming from Kane's flashlight on the other side of the attic. While he attempted to snap out of the confusion, the alpha took the opportunity to launch a follow-up attack. As the room spun and the corners of Pan's vision blurred, the massive Zubat swooped in close and let out a loud screech -- it was using Astonish! The Panpour shouted in surprise, and as he flinched away, the bat dragged its tiny clawed feet across his cheek. This was enough of a sobering experience to help snap Pan out of his confusion, allowing him to finally land another Scratch. 9R8dpd7C

A random event has occurred!
As he offered kibble to her, the normal-sized Zubat idly flied in space, who was seemed cautious at the Ranger. Eventually, it accepted some of them, but remained protective to the small Zubat. It seemed that this female bat was the mother of this little guy and from what it reacted, it seemed it wasn't willing to accept Kane just yet. Unfortunately, the silence broken as they heard the alpha Zubat screeched in pain thanks to Pan's Scratch. Out of frustration, it let out a loud Supersonic that not only penetrated Kane's ears, but also below the attic as some of the house's residents covered their ears in pain with some of their glasses about to break. You might want to finish the battle unless you want extra bills for broken glass windows.

From what Kane was witnessing between the tiny Zubat and the female, it seemed that it was a mother and her baby. Perhaps this wasn't actually the case, but it was easier for him to conceptualize their relationship as such. She was protective of the little one, and the little one responded to her actions by staying back. If it was just the two of them, the situation would have been significantly easier for him to the handle. But no one became a Ranger because it was "easy." That had never been in the job description. The problem was the alpha, who was now using Supersonic in response to being attacked. Kane instinctively recoiled from the sound and dropped everything in his hands to cover his ears. He closed his eyes and gritted his teeth as he tried to protect his sensitive eardrums from the high-pitched, painful noise. Though Pan suffered a similar fate, he was far more engaged in combat and was quick to retaliate. Yes, his eardrums throbbed and he had a hard maintaining his balance as a result, but he was determined to shut the Zubat up and to help his trainer. With a low, continuous grunt of frustration, Pan skittered across the beam. Unfortunately for him, Kane had dropped the flashlight, casting the attic in pitch darkness again. Regardless, Pan was able to feel his way around. Once he was near the far end of the attic, where the roof slopped downward, he jumped into the air and grabbed onto the unfinished beams above. He dangled like this for half a second before launching himself toward the source of the Supersonic. AwrUyuRwp_(roll to see if Pan hits his target) p_(roll to see if they land safely) Success! Pan's body collided with the Zubat's, and the impact caused the alpha to stop screaming. Although there was a strong possibility that both Pokémon would land between the beams, hit the drywall, and fall through the ceiling of the house, the Panpour had planned ahead. Before taking the leap, he had positioned himself in such a way where they both managed to land atop one of the carefully-stacked boxes. Good thing too. Any damages caused by the fight would have likely been paid by the Ranger Union, but it also would have landed Kane in hot water with his supervisors. Plus, it likely would have made the homeowners doubt Rangers' integrity. Though Kane was a bit too preoccupied to recognize Pan's efforts in the moment, he would look back at this fight in a few days and praise his partner's skill.
In an attempt to keep the alpha from opening its mouth and doing any more harm, the aquatic primate stood on one of its wings and used his paws to Scratch its face. As silence filled the attic, Kane pulled his hands free from his ears, opened his eyes, and quickly reached for the flashlight that had once again landed among the insulation.
