The racing season couldn't get here fast enough. Though Josh enjoyed the Gym Challenge on the side, being a Trainer did carry additional responsibility. He had a civic duty as a Trainer to ensure Pokémon were not used for evil; only for just and good causes. It is part of the oath every Johto Trainer takes when reaching adulthood. While he was no longer in Johto, he felt the oath applied to whatever region he was traveling in. As such, he couldn't turn down the opportunity to make a difference in the restoration of Slate City's vigor. Plus, he might make a quick Pen in the process!
Unfortunately, this would mean many of his larger Pokémon would need to stay back; as much as he would love to bring Meteos, the Aerodactyl was far too large to maneuver around the mines. Even Ixion would probably be pushing it; he would need to bring Pokémon that rode low to the ground. He also needed to bring Yagyu, his trusty sidearm; with the enemy being malicious, extremist trainers, he might need to defend himself directly. He showed the security officer his Trainer credentials. Once he had approval to enter the mines on official business, Josh sent out Inky, who looked ready to kick some serious butt. The now-cooperative Glaceon sat down to let the trainer more easily climb aboard, a cool mist surrounding the two as they delved into the first sublevel...

The cold was to be expected; after all, he was atop an ice-type. That was one of the reasons Josh didn't take his coat off in the first place! Even with it, though, it was still cold. While able to tolerate it for about the amount of time he explored the (rather small) part of the first sublevel, he had to hop off right before the tunnel down to the second sublevel. "Sorry Inky, but it's...really cold in here. I gotta call you back and warm up a bit."
The Glaceon was understanding, but not happy about being swapped out for Clyde. "Alright, let's go," he said while gently patting the Flareon's head, then swinging aboard. "No Embers, please." Fire-type attacks were not a good idea in an enclosed space; while the latent heat of a Flareon would be fine, intense fire attacks would destroy the local supply of oxygen. The heat from the red and orange fur did feel good as the two descended to the much larger sublevel two, the large and varying numbers of footprints a sign that he had a lot of help in apprehending the Epochs responsible for this mess the miners found themselves in.

As Josh and Clyde wandered the tunnels, the temperature started to drop. It made sense for that to happen; after all, colder air sinks. But not this suddenly, nor this rapidly. "Think you can turn it up a little bit, Clyde?" Josh asked his Flareon mount, who was quick to honor the request. "Not too much, though!" The fire-type's fluffy tail started to glow a dim orange, the rider's back nice and toasty. It didn't do much for the rest of his body, though.
Once the two had made a circuit around the Phase 2 Shaft, Josh noticed the tunnel up to the top sublevel had frozen over completely. From ceiling to floor, solid ice. There was something down here that was not native to the mines, as ice Pokémon lived at higher altitudes. Complicating matters, the distant echo of an old male and a young male reached his ears. With how much echo there was, it was difficult to pinpoint the source of the noise. He released Pinky the Sylveon in front of him. "Your hearing is way better than mine - think you could scout where those voices are coming from?" The bright Pokémon nodded, ears shifting as he searched for the source of the voices...

Clyde didn't back down one moment when she heard the voices telling the two to leave. She did slow her pace a little to allow Josh to hear better. Even with echo from the subterannean environment, Josh could tell something was off about the voice. It also seemed to be coming from a direction away from the ice. "A little more...perfect," he replied to his Flareon's actions. The heat from Clyde's tail slowly spread up his body, eventually restoring full feeling to the rider's fingers.
The more Josh listened to the voices, the more he understood: the tone, at the very least, was off. There was a lot more distress than intimidation in its tone. He didn't want to call out to the voice in case it was a trap; instead, he kept one hand on his Flareon's reins and another on Yagyu's hilt, in case something went awry.

Both Josh and Clyde tensed up the moment they heard the sound of battle beneath them. He kept one hand on the fire-type's reins and the other on Yagyu's sheath as the two cautiously continued forward. Upon reaching a corner, the two stopped again, Clyde peeking around it again before her ears perked up again. "Clear?" he asked. The orange Pokémon nodded. "Clear. Let's go."
The moment the two turned the corner, the biting wind returned. While Clyde could not see due to the strong wind forcing her eyes shut, Josh's visor protected his vision and let him see a faint shadow at the end of the tunnel. Using careful and precise leg commands, he lined up Clyde to directly face the shadow. "Ember!" the rider half-shouted, the Flareon letting loose three small fireballs large enough to scare off or incapacitate whatever was down there yet not so strong as to burn much oxygen off. The small part was important; he wasn't carrying a Water-type with him to douse the attack, either.

Their assailant was now clearly visible; a Kingler-sized Krabby menacingly snapping its pincers at Clyde. No wonder it was so chilly down here; this Pokémon had to be using Icy Wind to try to trap the two. From both the voice's response and the strange badge wrapped around the Krabby's top head protrusion, this Pokémon likely belonged to Team Epoch, its trainer nearby.
Josh was relieved that he would be able to use something other than fire attacks; electric attacks wouldn't cause enough environmental harm to be worrying. He hurled Blinky's Poké Ball over Clyde's head and had the Jolteon engage the Water-type. "Ramming speed, Blinky!" he shouted, Clyde flinching from the unnecessary volume of her trainer's cry entering the ears.
With her new, much healthier-looking claws, the Jolteon was no longer afraid of direct combat. She flung herself claws-first into the crustacean so fast that there was barely any time to react. By the time Krabby could fire off an Icy Wind to retaliate, it was too late. A loud cracking noise echoed around the battleground when the two collided with a cave wall at the end of the tunnel.
The chilling attack did cause Blinky's leg muscles to tense up, messing up her timing for a follow-up Quick Arrack. It leaped right into Krabby's open pincer instead, leaving the Jolteon with an unwanted face piercing from the appendance sharp as freshly-filed metal. Her instincts kicking in, Blinky loosed a potent Thundershock that left Krabby paralyzed and unable to continue holding the Jolteon down. Once the coast was clear, Josh had Clyde advance to directly behind Blinky's position. "Who's next?!" he shouted down the corridor the Krabby had come from.

With the Icy Wind having dissipated, the temperature was already beginning to normalize on the northeast side of the second level of the Slate City Mines. Once his body had begun to warm back up, Josh switched back to riding Pinky, the riderless Flareon now joining Blinky and Inky on the front lines. With the distance between himself and the battleground where the fire-type attacks would be, he wasn't overly concerned about doing damage to the local air supply. Clyde's Embers were such low-powered fire attacks that they wouldn't burn more oxygen than a few lamps; the air would cycle around in due time. Nonetheless, he observed the battle from around the corner, ready to withdraw his team and retreat if things went awry.
While it would complicate matters having a half-team battle all at once, it would certainly make things much faster; it was simply a matter of Josh shifting his eyes around, doing his best to monitor all three battles. Inky had managed to draw the horned poison-type away from the other two, combatants, Clyde and Blinky doing their best to keep the steel-types away from their blue relative. The artificial lighting certainly made it easier for Josh to observe.
Once it was clear the three saddled Pokémon were controlling their individual battles, Josh at last opened his mouth and began taunting the clearly desperate Epoch agent. "Big mistake," he said, flashing his Gym Badge from Russetton toward the agent in an effort to get him to back down. It didn't seem like it was, though.
After running circles around the slower steel-types, the two managed to sandwich Blinky between them; even with her new claws, agility was enough of an issue that she couldn't slow down to avoid a collision with the Cufant. She tried to loose one last Thundershock after the Cufant had already taken two, but could not do it; Cufant's and Bronzor's crushing charges, compounded with her previous injuries from the battle with the Krabby, was enough to take her down. Josh recalled the Jolteon, then directed Clyde to focus on lighting the Cufant on fire.
By now, Inky was just wrapping up her battle with his Poison-type foe. He had covered the west side of the open cave in ice just to be able to see the poison needles the Nidoran had scattered about, but that didn't reveal all of them; while trying to avoid the charges, he was still stepping on some of them periodically. Just as the crystals dangling from his hair were whirling to create an Ice Beam aimed directly at his foe's race, Bronzor had broken the line, glowing a distinct violet color. While Josh's Pokémon got the attack off just in time, the psychic attack was too much for him to handle, leaving him open for a follow-up Tackle across the knees.
Having finished with her opponent, Clyde took the opportunity to strike the Bronzor from behind while it was still celebrating its strong maneuver against the Glaceon. The five Embers overheated the Bronzor, sending it floating out of control and into one of the lights surrounding the battleground. It caused a short circuit, all the lights in the chamber going out at the same time. Though Josh had won the battle, it wasn't without its casualties, plus there was a chance the agent could escape in the darkness. "Hold some Embers out so I can see, Clyde!" The Flareon did as told, the dim light revealing only a silhouette of the Epoch member. Thankfully, he was getting just enough signal that he could send a message to Slate City police using his phone. He let them know his coordinates in the mines and that he had apprehended a Team Epoch agent on the second level, but to bring external lightning due to an electrical failure.

That was simple enough! Josh wondered how the Epochs were such a serious issue if ordinary trainers were able to best them in battle so easily. Pinky, with his trainer on his back still, followed the officers leading the way out of the dark section of the mines. Once they could clearly see, he couldn't help but smile upon hearing remarks about his racing-trained Sylveon; to even have such an unusual Pokémoun mount was a sign of wealth. They weren't wrong, either. While Josh wasn't exactly what one would call filthy rich, he was rather well off for someone his age. Perhaps he would become wealthy after making the pro league...if he could get skilled enough to do so.
Once Josh had left the mines completely, seeing the Arcanine-mounted squad instilled a desire to catch one of them for himself. While they weren't great race Pokémon on most courses due to handling like a Miltank on skates, they excelled at courses with long straightaways. Plus, it would be great fun to take one to a wide-open field, such as the one west of the mines, and let loose with Extreme Speed. He daydreamed about it all the way to the police station, where he filed his verbal report on the encounter with the Epochs.
