It was a good thing Josh had remembered to bring both long pants and shorts with him - while it was certainly warm during the daytime near the entrance to Roch Canyon, it got freezing cold at night. A multi-day trip was something anyone going to or from Russetton had to fully prepare for. Elsewhere, the sheer speed Josh's Pokémon were capable of could get him to and from even distant towns in a single day. This road was different, though; not only was it long, but it got rough after passing the riverside and into the canyon splitting the Roch Plateau and the Whitecap Mountains. The racer was no cook; he had brought his meals with him in advance. Once they actually got to town, Josh would treat himself and his team to a great meal, even if it wasn't cheap. It would be something to look forward to after a day of traveling across some rough trails. After a light breakfast that left something to be desired, the racer packed up his tent and sent out his Ponyta and Jolteon. He loaded Ixion up with his non-emergency supplies, then mounted Blinky and led the way into the canyon at a brisk pace. --- Koa Leilani NAME SPECIES LV EP STATUS Ixion Ponyta 10 3 Good Bladestorm Skarmory 10 3 Good Twilight Absol 10 3 Good Blinky Jolteon 7 3 Good Inky Glaceon 8 3 Good Pinky Sylveon 8 3 Good{WC: 204} {PC: 1}

The terrain here was highly reminiscent of Poni Island back on Alola. Dry, arid, and rough terrain. It still wasn't Koa's preferred climate, especially not when trying to ride a bike across it. Despite this he continued his leisurely ride along the smoother parts of the road. He came to a stop and take a drink from his water bottle for the journey ahead. He had prepared for the long trek, having packed light camping supplies in the event he would have to camp out somewhere. He would have to make sure to find a stable area that won't collapse or get bombarded by and cold winds that may sweep through the canyons.
The road only got more rough after passing into the canyon itself, though it was thankfully still rather easy to navigate. However, as he rode ahead, he saw the glimpse of a familiar figure dart ahead. "Isn't that...? No way." He picked up the pace and rode faster through down the road "Hey!" He called out as he tried his best to catch up, though a speeding Jolteon wasn't the easiest thing to keep pace with. "Josh! It's Koa!" He kept trying to get his attention as he tried to meet up with his friend from a previous journey.
What a small world...to think it wasn't long ago that he saw one of his races. Why was he here, he wondered. Hopefully their career was going well. If they traveled together they would have plenty of opportunities to catch up. His team was safely in their Pokeballs, so the rough terrain and sudden burst of speed wouldn't be an issue for them. This route was likely full of many good Pokemon to find, so perhaps he could start on his mission to befriend some.

Before long, there were no grasses anywhere; there was just dead brush blowing past Josh and his two swift Pokémon as he descended. It wouldn't be long before he was below sea level. As the terrain became more rocky, Blinky was forced to retract her long, narrow claws as to avoid snapping them in half. The slower speed this warranted gave Ixion a chance to catch up, the two running alongside each other now. Over the howling winds, Josh was barely able to hear a human voice shouting at him. "Hey, girl, ease up a bit more, if you would?" Sparks ceased flying from the electric-type's paws as the two swift Pokémon slowed to a light canter. The voice got louder as its source pedaled onward. Josh guided his Jolteon back and forth across the canyon, doing his best to get a good look behind him with each pass. "...Koa? That's a face I haven't seen in a hot minute," he said to himself before waving back. "Hey! Didn't expect you to follow me here!" Though Josh was trying to slow his Jolteon down, the hard ground preventing her from using her claws as well as the downhill trail made it difficult to do so. Hopefully their somewhat reduced speed would allow his old friend to catch up... --- Koa Leilani NAME SPECIES LV EP STATUS Ixion Ponyta 10 3 Good Bladestorm Skarmory 10 3 Good Twilight Absol 10 3 Good Blinky Jolteon 7 3 Good Inky Glaceon 8 3 Good Pinky Sylveon 8 3 Good{WC: 220} {PC: 2}

The arid landscapes before him were calming and beautiful in their own ways. The way the sun shined along the sands and rocky plateaus gave it a bright, vivid landscape accentuated by the kicked up dust from the wind. The dry air was pretty rough to get used to, though. He should have brought some eye drops in case he got dry eye. Either way, it seemed that Josh heard Koa's call and began to slow down so that he could catch up.
He grinned happily as he finally caught up "Yeah I know! Trust me, it's a coincidence. Things were a little rough so I decided to take a bit of a vacation...next thing I knew, I was given the option to transfer. After taking a break back home, I put the request in to work here now. Got to say, it's been an interesting change of pace...a few Pokemon from my old team are back home with my family, but many of them are still with me."
The downhill trail was a little difficult to keep pace with and keep conversation going, so he waited until they were on more steady ground "What about you? What brings you to Ageos? I hope your racing career's going alright." He said with genuine interest and support. He looked at the team that was out and following Josh "From what I see it looks like you're still running with a team meant for speed, so...I assume you're still at it!"

Josh couldn't help but cough a few times from the dust cloud that blew their way. "Wonder if putting my visor down might be a good idea," he mumbled, then smiled when Koa brought up his transfer. "Heh, I thought you'd heard I was coming out here, given how much time we'd spent together. I went back to Johto for a while to see if I could finish the Gym Challenge there. Nope!" Blinky held her head down for a moment, remembering it all too well. "Jasmine's still impossible for me to beat with this team. The racing season in Johto is also being heavily abbreviated this year; figured I'd come to a region that has all its Psyduck in a row."Josh got the message when Koa went silent on the downhill trail. Even Blinky had to slow down to maintain her balance - one misstep could send both of them flying. While he followed as much safety as he could, if the two fell together, Josh would be spending the rest of the morning picking out Jolteon quills. While they were only charged while attached to the Pokémon itself, they still hurt a lot. "I ended up missing qualifying for Gold League, unfortunately, so I'll be stuck in Silver League. Glad to hear you're still interested, though," he answered when Koa asked him about how his career was going. "So, Blinky here. She's bred for racing...but for drag racing, not for Federation racing like you saw. I always wanted a Jolteon bred for racing, only to learn she's just too fast to control." His Jolteon, then his Ponyta, couldn't help but laugh at the way he described his misfortune. Johto...he hadn't been to that region himself so he wasn't too familiar with the gym leaders that work there. Still, it seemed the both of them had went home for a while before coming to Ageos for a new adventure. Apparently Johto's racing league was giving Josh some issues, so he decided to come here to participate instead "Hopefully the Ageos racing league lives up to the hype. You were doing really well before! So I hope it all goes just as well for you now." He said with an encouraging smile. He paused to wipe his glasses off.
He frowned slightly that Josh didn't qualify for the Gold League like he wanted, though wanted to give his two cents on Pokemon racing "It's not my expertise but Pokemon can learn to pace themselves and have better control over time. I don't think that it's impossible for Blinky to learn a little bit of control along with her speed. Far from it, actually." He said. He looked back at the Ponyta. It seemed he was going for a varied team that could fill different race niches better. "Pokemon are adaptive. It's in their nature, so there's got to be a few exercises that can help teach them different ways to race."
Before they could continue speaking, Koa spotted something darting across the dunes before a Vulpix scrambled onto the road in front of his bike. Koa slammed the breaks and skid his feet along the ground to come to a quick enough stop. The Vulpix darted around him in circles and barked at him in an almost playful, yet mischievous manner. A lone Vulpix that small going around causing some playful trouble? Seemed the type to do things first and worry about the consequences later.
Koa braced his bike and stood across from this Vulpix. The two stared each other down for a bit before Koa got onto a knee and held his hand out. It wasn't until now that Koa realized that the air seemed...warmer around the Vulpix. It made sense, but this was noticeably hotter. "Drought...? That's a rare one..." He muttered to himself before he saw the Vulpix tackle his hand and played with it, kicking at his fingers. He smiled softly "Hey there little one...where's your family?" He asked as he looked around. It seemed pretty barren out here. He didn't see any other Pokemon for the moment. He didn't hear anything either "Are you out here on your own?" He scratched the back of the fox's ear.
He scratched under the fox's chin for a moment, thinking "Maybe it wants to come along..?" He mused to himself before he pulled out a Pokeball. The Vulpix darted away for a moment before curiously awaiting his next move. Koa would then throw the ball towards Vulpix and would let the dice fall.

The latent temperature slowly rose as the two trainers continued westward. "It'll mostly depend on what the courses are like," Josh answered as Blinky started breathing a little more heavily. Before he could ask, Josh noticed exactly what the issue was; it wasn't just warm in the canyon; it was downright hot. The electric Pokémon made a wide turn to the edge of the trail and looped back to kill her speed before meeting up with Koa again. He dismounted long enough to take his jacket off, revealing a shirt that was drenched from the highest of his chest upward. Could it have been that Vulpix? A small amount of Vulpix inexplicably had the ability to herald summer-like weather. The racer was about to ask Koa a question when he saw the young man practicing his Ranger skills on the wild Pokémon. Ninetales made great race Pokémon, provided they were big enough and strong enough to carry a trainer. They were very rare in Johto, but from what he observed about wild Pokémon in Ageos, much more common here. Still not common by any stretch of the imagination, but accessible to those without fat wads of cash. He took the opportunity to check on his supplies, making sure there were Potions at the top of his medicine stash. In the process, he discovered there were a few vials of Antidote more than there were when he left the camp site! Perhaps he had miscounted before... It seemed the fire-type, on the other hand, had other plans. Josh apologized to Koa at first for the missed opportunity, then realized perhaps the Vulpix just had better opportunities than following a Trainer. Abruptly changing the subject, he went back to answering the Ranger's initial question. "I would normally agree with you, but because Blinky was bred for a specific purpose, I don't know how much control she could even develop." The Jolteon extended her claws; while sharp-looking, they were rather thin; almost unhealthily so. They were designed to grip the ground during bursts of extreme acceleration, powering dead sprints that could approach, but not quite reach, speeds rivaling even legendary Pokémon. If she were to use them to try to brake or turn, she would run the risk of snapping them. --- Koa Leilani NAME SPECIES LV EP STATUS Ixion Ponyta 10 3 Good Bladestorm Skarmory 10 3 Good Twilight Absol 10 3 Good Blinky Jolteon 7 3 Good Inky Glaceon 8 3 Good Pinky Sylveon 8 3 Good{WC: 383} {PC: 4}

Koa seemed a little disappointed. "Aw...that never hurts any less no matter how many times that happens." He said as his arm hung at his side. He adjusted his glasses and put the Pokeball away before walking back to his bike to get ready to move on with their journey. It was always saddening to see a Pokemon decide not to come along, but it was bound to happen sometimes.
Josh seemed to have a bit of a lucky find in the form of extra medical supplies. That's always good to see! His attempt to change the subject though, simply darkened the Ranger's expression as he paused for a moment "I'm sorry, but I need to get this off my chest." He said, a hint of anger in his voice. "Legs are what drives speed and acceleration, Josh. Claws can grip and pull forward, but I don't see how dangerously thin claws would assist in that. I'd argue they'd have to be slightly large for the best benefit since durable strong claws allow for tighter traction and pull. You want a Pokemon to be faster? Train it through endurance exercises and runs. I'd prefer not to hear about how people breed Pokemon with glaring weaknesses that could affect their lives in exchange for a tiny advantage in one thing in their lives. It's one thing to prefer certain abilities in Pokemon. Things they can naturally have. It just seems irresponsible and unfair to the Pokemon to have aspects of their natural forms harmed for the sake of one thing." He said, almost shouting in his anger.
He looked away "Pokemon are powerful, amazing creatures that deserve our respect and admiration. There's more to their strength than what they're born with. Our experiences and belief in them is more important than any trait they might have. Teach it to make leaping, bounding turns without the use of the claws. Or stop and start. If their acceleration and speed is that amazing, then stopping for a split second to get a good turn in shouldn't be a problem."
Koa began to ride ahead for a moment "But what do I know? I'm not a racer." He said, clearly upset, but he had to say something. He didn't want Pokemon to be hurt, but he also didn't want to be seen as rude or judgmental. Though he is a Ranger and Pokemon safety is another large part of his job description.

Koa's words pierced Josh's heart. He stopped the Electric-type completely, then dismounted and held his head down in self-directed disgust. While it was true that Pokémon bred for racing typically had handicaps that surfaced outside the track, Blinky had bred for one purpose: breaking records in straight-line sprints. It wasn't even the type of racing Josh did. Either way, though, he was responsible for the Jolteon. It took him a while to gather the courage to speak up to his traveling companion and friend. "...Just promise me you won't take this the wrong way, okay?" Josh asked, finally tilting his head to address Koa fave-to-face. If he got Koa's approval, he would start explaining. "I later found out that Blinky wasn't bred for the type of racing I do. This kind of...what's the word...overspecialization, I think? Well, it's very commonplace at the highest levels of competition, every team looking to leverage every small edge they can get. You see, Blinky is a sprinter; that's what she was bred to do."
Blinky walked behind Josh, retracted her claws, and gently pat him with her front paw, careful to avoid spiking him with her quills. His head sunk a second time as Koa continued, particularly when he mentioned Pokémon having more strength than they were born with. "You're right, though. And it's not that she can't do it. If she has to, she can. Quickly decelerating from the speed she can get up to, though, is really hard on her paws. It is something we can one hundred percent work on. Perhaps in the preseason?"
With how emotional he was getting, he couldn't bring himself to hop back on Blinky - he couldn't imagine what the electric-type had gone through under her previous owner. Giving the Jolteon a break, he released a Sylveon that was around the same size, maybe a bit larger. Not rushing at a breakneck pace would be a much safer change, given the terrain. "Alright, Pinky - let's go!" A sloshing noise accompanied Josh climbing aboard the jumbo-sized Sylveon, his white-and-blue feelers flapping in the breeze as the fire, electric, and fairy-type Pokémon ran alongside each other. They were back on the road to Russetton. --- Will battle the Falinks horde next post. Koa was silent as Josh responded to him. His words looked to have an impact on him, though Koa worried it was not in a way he would have preferred. Josh seemed downtrodden and upset at what he said if his dismount was any indication. He offered him a patient smile and nodded for him to continue speaking. He tilted his head as he thought about the racing scene "Hm...I suppose I just don't understand the racing scene as much as I should. I feel there are other ways to earn and advantage, but I really shouldn't speak on topics I'm unfamiliar with..." He said as he looked away.
Then, Josh said how Koa was right, which surprised him. "Just take care of your Pokemon and pace them well, yeah? Everything starts with a good training regiment. Pace yourselves well and just...well, believe in each other. I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that last part though." He grinned brightly, as friendly as ever. "Just...I'm sorry. I still feel like what I said was out of line and unfair to you and your Pokemon. It must have sounded like I was making pretty mean-spirited assumptions, and I apologize. You and your Pokemon...I can tell you're all important to each other."
Before the two of them could speak further, a rather beautiful woman was resting at a campsite nearby. She looked a little bored, so as soon as she saw Koa and Josh approach her expression lit up "Hey you two!" She called out. "Didn't expect to see anyone else on this rough road today. Either of you two up for a battle? I'm taking a break from traveling but I'm bored out of my mind..." She sighed.
Koa looked at Josh, then at the trainer and figured Josh could use some time to himself "Yeah sure, I'm down." He said as he approached the open area aside the camp site. The opposing trainer first sent out a Skiddo. In response, Koa decided to send out his Mienfoo, Toki. Skiddo began with a charge in an attempt to Tackle, but Toki countered with a Fake Out, motioning to strike their foe head on, but swept his leg against the Skiddo's front leg at the last second to send it tumbling away a few feet. Surprisingly though, the Skiddo bounded back onto its hooves and returned to charging at Toki. Toki is slammed and knocked away by the force of the tackle, but as he lands and skids across the rocky terrain, he clenches a paw. Energy starts to swirl around his fist, preparing a Focus Punch. Skiddo once again charges forward to interrupt Toki, but he steps around the attack just in time to counter with the fully charged Focus Punch. The impact of the heavy strike knocked Skiddo over and left them unable to battle any further.
"Ooh, not bad! Come on back, Skiddo, you did a good job!" The trainer praised as she sent out her next Pokemon, Starly. It took him a moment to decide on what to send out next, but he decided now would be good training for his Snom, Seina. The ice bug type was large for its kind as it sort of scooted along at its leisure. Its icy shell was plenty chilled for this environment. Starly began with a Quick Attack to sweep Seina off the ground. Seina is thrown into the air, but seems nonplussed about it as she uses Powder Snow to shoot a spray of snow against Starly, making it difficult for it to stay aloft. Both Starly and Seina land back on the ground, Seina curled up in her shell as she slowly unfurled herself. Without missing a beat she used Powder Snow again, but the Starly swooped above dove down on her with a Tackle. Feeling a little dazed, Seina still mustered up another spray of Powder Snow in retaliation. The Starly is coated in even more snow and is too weighed down to do much else. The victory went to Seina.
The other trainer didn't seem too distraught. In fact she looked like she was having a blast! "Don't think I can really catch up now, but let's wrap this up!" She said as she sent out a Meowth, the strongest member of her team. Koa returned Seina to her Pokeball and sent out his Fomantis, Sakuya. The Meowth grinned slyly as its claws shined brightly, Hone Claws in full effect. Sakuya glared back and dug some roots into the ground, gathering nutrients and seeming stronger, having used Growth to power up as well. Meowth dove foward, slashing heavily against Sakuya with its claws as she stumbles back from the surprisingly hard hit. It knew exactly where to strike for the most damage. Sakuya angrily retaliated with a flurry of Seed Bombs. They erupted from the ground and shot into the air before raining down on the Meowth, who nimbly managed to avoid a few of them, but one hit them directly, causing them to stumble. Still, they were now close to each other again and began to share an exchange of Meowth's scratches and Sakuya's Fury Cutter. Meowth's claws and Sakuya's leaves clashed against one another in a flurry of strikes, but Sakuya managed to knock Meowth off balance enough for her to get one last definitive strike in as the Meowth fainted.
Victory was Koa's! He scooped Sakuya into his arms and hugged her gently "Good going, girl." He smiled at her as she wiggled happily in his arms. The other trainer tended to her Pokemon "Wow, you're pretty good! Love the Pokemon choice too! I can see you going pretty far!" She said. Koa blushed at the praise and scratched his cheek "I'm trying my best...th-thanks for the compliment."
He bid farewell to the trainer and got back on his bike to follow Josh "How are you feeling...?" He asked.

"...I needed that," was Josh's slow response to Koa's question. "And to be fair, I'm not at the level of competition where small edges like that are super important. You have no idea how crazy it gets at the professional level unless you've watched it on TV before." Pinky couldn't help but grow the smile on his face, seeing Josh snap out of his poor mood quickly. And not a moment too soon, either - there was a large formation of wild Pokémon right in his way. Normally, this wouldn't be an issue for him...not with Bladestorm, anyway. He was traveling with Koa, though, and they only had one flying Pokémon between them. Before Josh could even pull up his phone's Pokédex app, the leaders of the horde had already ordered their comrades into an attacking formation, blocking the canyon road as they swiftly marched in lockstep. "This could get ugly," Josh warned Koa as he sent out almost his entire team, leaving Twilight on standby in case an emergency retreat was needed. They looked like Fighting-type Pokémon at first glance. "Alright, let's go everyone!" Bladestorm, Blinky, and Inky, a Skarmory, Jolteon, and Glaceon, respectively, all emerged to do battle. Josh dismounted Pinky to allow him to join in on the effort, as well. "Just focus on thinning their ranks; the fewer of them there are, the easier this will be!"
The mirrored aggression from Josh's squad rallied the commanding Falinks to rally their team, surging their emotions and getting them pumped for battle. All three Eeveelutions held back while Bladestorm dove into the formation in an attempt to scatter it. Her tacric worked - one of the smallest of the wilds collapsed underneath the force of the shallow dive, its shields the only thing preventing it from being completely skewered. "Pinky, use your Disarming Voice on them!" While the Sylveon's voice was surprisingly deep, even for his kind, he could still wow even the hardest heart with his song, dropping morale and even causing some of the horde to walk away from the battle. It was always good when battles that weren't for sport could be resolved with as little pain as possible. The ones that weren't driven away, though, were driven to anger. The remaining wilds numbering eighteen, they formed two lines and simultaneously charged the Sylveon. "Inky, stop them with your Icy Wind!" Josh shouted another command, already overwhelmed from how chaotic the battle was getting. Between the crystal-laden, biting wind amplified by the dry conditions and Pinky's song, these group attacks were very effective at thinning the horde's numbers. The surviving members were driven to a frenzy, dogpiling Inky and Pinky with their spiked shields. Two had pierced the Sylveon's feelers with their shields. With the help of four more from the formation, they were able to lift Pinky from the ground and hurl her into sharp rocks high up the cliffside. The initial impact, the impact of the fall, and the throbbing pain from his pierced, sensitive feelers was too much for him to overcome. Likewise, the repeated, coordinated thrusts against Inky's cold fur created wounds too deep for the Glaceon to withstand. Both were out, Josh recalling him while the Falinks regrouped to target Blinky next. Bladestorm took back to the air, this time her sights on one of the alphas already in bad shape from the Eeveelutions' attacks. Though it was aware the attack was coming, it, like the others the Skarmory dove upon, could not withstand the weight upon its shields. Though it would live to fight another day, it wasn't fighting anything else any time soon. Her effort, combined with another Thundershock from Blinky, reduced the horde to a mere six members - the size of a single Falinks platoon. Unable to reach Bladestorm, the remaining six surrounded Blinky close enough that she couldn't get a running start to jump over them. They closed in on her at the same time, thrusting their spiked shields toward her. Sparks flew from her face as she howled in pain. Not wanting to see a third casualty, Josh recalled the Jolteon before she pushed herself to the point of collapse. With only the Skarmory left, the Falinks were forced to play a reactive battle against the flying foe, only able to counterattack when she wheeled toward them. She had a distinct advantage, though; her metal armor much more easily blocked the spiked shields. It wasn't as effective when the six struck in the same place, though! On the third such exchange, the Pokémon pierced and cracked each others' natural armor, resulting in simultaneous KOs. As soon as the dust had settled, Josh recalled his fainted Skarmory, then sent out his Injured Jolteon and began spraying her wounds with a vial of Potion. While his hands were far from steady, they were steady enough to treat his prized sprinter's wounds with the medicine she needed to continue carrying Josh toward Russetton. --- Koa Leilani Apply EXP.
