While the best place to get experience digging for treasure was the Slate City Mines, the mountains were not a place Shalin wanted to brave with just her Beedrill. Thankfully for her, the ore veins were rather rich, as she had found out from Don Lasko, a senior staff member from a Slate-based mining company. He happened to be traveling near Cerise City, and was willing to show Shalin the basics of unearthing the area's abundant treasure. The vein she arrived at was located near the southwest corner of the Emerald Forest, that being a large hole in the ground. When Shalin found how narrow the hole was, she realized she would not have the defense of Queen Zing available to her. That was one downside of raising only ride Pokémon: they couldn't help out at all in confined spaces. She sent her Pokémon out anyway. "I'm going to need you to stand guard while I take a look inside." Don was a bit intimidated by the giant Beedrill, the saddle she wore a sign she was well under control not too much more reassuring.
With a small pick in hand, she descended into the rock-laden hole, seeing chitin shedding and yellow, hexagonal structures all around her. It appeared this hole in the ground was at one point home to a sizable Beedrill nest that had long since been vacated, presumably for some place warmer. Switching her head-lamp on, her eyes shifted back and forth for glinting objects embedded in the rock walls.

Something has happened! Congratulations! Shalin NariyaSuccess! Your idea of flashing the light over the walls for a glimmer of something special worked wonders and you're able to see the glint of something on one wall. It takes a small amount of effort to pry it loose and you're now the proud owner of a Normal Gem!

Shalin was right to trust someone who had been in the mining business for a while. Anywhere around the Slate City Mines, even if wasn't in the main complex, there were treasures waiting to be unearthed! It was hard to tell the quality of the gem while in the dark tunnels, especially with only her lantern light to go by. She would have a chance to take a look at it when the small bag she carried with her was filled; she left her usual supply bag with Queen Zing to be able to squeeze through smaller tunnels more easily.
The location of the gem was also a visual cue she could use to maintain orientation underground; that direction had to be toward Slate City Mines proper, where most of the treasure was buried. She continued to pick at the earth around her, seeing what awaited deeper in the fork she found the Gem at...

Something has happened! What will you do? Shalin NariyaYou find nothing of use this time, but you do see some signs that this is a potentially good spot! It seems tough enough that you don't think anyone else has dug this spot dry and each pry of the pickaxe seems to come off in chunks rather than crumbling away. One of these chunks seems eager to greet you and falls toward your foot.

The spot directly behind the Gem didn't immediately yield anything, but Shalin felt she was on the right track. Her experience in the wilderness let her discern which way was north, even if she couldn't see the sun. The northwest-leading tunnel had shown few signs of being mined out, leaving the blonde with the inclination that finding something else was just a matter of time. She let out a cry as a fairly large piece of earth fell on her toes - ouch! Thankfully, her shoes blunted the impact, but it still hurt. Maybe she should have opted for metal-tipped boots when down here, after all.
Shalin's progress on the right side of the tunnel outpaced the left as she lost track of time. It took her until she couldn't reach deeper into the right that she should probably balance both sides. She shifted to the tunnel's left side, picking away at the earth not only in search of more treasure, but more room to fit her body in...

Something has happened! What will you do? Shalin NariyaAlas, nothing to be found. As you move to the opposite side of the tunnel and begin to hit the wall of the tunnel, you realize you're being dusted. With every swing of the pickaxe, the roof of the spot just above seems to be giving way. It's not a great experience to try to breath with sand and dried remnants of hive coming down on you and you're not sure what's causing it all to fall, either.

Shalin started coughing as fine particles began to fall on top of her, forcing her to tilt her head downward to avoid ingesting them. She might have even inhaled some dust and not known it, what with how limited the lighting situation was. She faintly heard an echo of Queen Zing buzzing for a second or two after she backed out of the tunnel she had previously dug; perhaps the Beedrill was encouraging a potential intruder to steer clear. Either way, she trusted her close partner to handle guard duty.
After making her way back to the main Phase 1 Shaft, she walked down to the next fork, hoping it would be more fruitful than the previous one...and that the earth around this branch wasn't quite so brittle. She slammed her pick into the tunnel's edge, keeping her eyes peeled for a glint and her ears open for a distinct noise.

The lighter clinking noise was all she needed to hear - retracting her pick and arm, she noticed the glint of a tan gem. Carefully picking the earth around it, she was able to extract the gem after a bit of work. She gave her arms a rest to examine her find. No deformities from what the unaided eye could see, though she would need to put it under magnification of some kind to know for certain. She noticed the echoes of the buzzing noise had stopped, too - whatever was outside, her partner had chased away or otherwise dealt with.
Once her arms had recovered some, Shalin hoisted her pick once more and began hacking away at the tunnel's sides once more, around where she found the now-stowed jewel. She had started to feel some small rock particles in her hair, and it was getting uncomfortable. As much as she didn't want to go into town, it was too cold to bathe outside. She needed a shower.

Something has happened! What will you do? Shalin NariyaThe moment you start swinging again, a rock shifts and you hear a groan. A Lunatone lifts itself from its resting spot, your pick apparently nicking its side. Righting itself from its face-down position in the rocks, it glares at you...

Shalin glimpsed the reflection of a dark-colored jewel as she continued to pick at the end of the tunnel. When she struck near the jewel to try to extract it, the surrounding rock started moving. She had dug into a wild, sleeping Lunatone! "Eeeeeek!" she cried, extracting her pick as quickly as possible and fleeing as fast as her adrenaline rush would allow. Misjudging the angle of the tunnel leading into the Phase 1 shaft, she tripped over its corner and face-planted, letting out another cry as some sharp stones in the main shaft scraped against her.
By the time she managed to stand, her left cheek was pounding from the large scrapes. While it wasn't bleeding, thankfully, it still hurt quite a bit, and would need to be looked at. She made her way out of the shaft to be greeted by a concerned-looking Queen Zing. While she wasn't trained in true first-aid, she at least knew the wound needed to be covered. She dug through the first-aid kit in her supplies and covered the scrapes before heading down to the Phase 1 shaft once more, this time heading down a nearby tunnel in the direction opposite from the Lunatone.

Something has happened! What will you do? Shalin Nariya Well, looks like you're not out yet! This shaft gone deep enough for about fifteen minutes before you suddenly saw a cave-in at the end! It's a dead end! However, there's a small opening on a wall to your right! A wind blows (thankfully without any funny smell), indicating that it might leads somewhere different... What will you do? Will you dig the hole, or would you dig here instead?

A dead end! Shalin panicked at first when she reached the end of the tunnel. She turned around, ready to defend herself, but the Lunatone was nowhere in sight. Crisis averted...for now. She did lose her sense of direction during the panic, and getting out might be a bit of a problem until she could find her way back to the Phase 1 Shaft. There was ample signage toward the entrance of the complex, but it became progressively more scant the deeper she went.
Shortly after turning around, Shalin noticed a draft coming from the wall to her left. She shined her headlight toward the wall where the draft was coming from, and noticed a weak spot! Perhaps this was a completely fresh offshoot, full of treasure! Her energy revitalized, the blonde took her pick back out and began hacking away at the weak wall, excited to see what was on the other side!

Something has happened! Congratulations! Shalin Nariya It seems that your risky decision paid off as you found a Green Shard in the hole. Not only that, digging through the hole even further led you outside the mines, which you found that you're not far away from where you were right now.

Wait, this led outside the mines completely? She really must have been turned around! She squinted when her eyes were suddenly exposed to sunlight, though they didn't stay shut long when she faintly heard a familiar buzzing noise. "Hey! I'm over here!" she shouted. The source of the noise was indeed Queen Zing, who looked excited to see her trainer again. She embraced her trainer the best she could without risking nicking the girl with her foreleg stings.
While her haul wasn't particularly large, there were some rare gems she would need to get appraised. There would be time for that later, though; she was sweating from all that hard work underground, and that was not a good thing in this cold! Rather than flying home on her bobbing bug-type, she swapped Pokémon to the much warmer Caprice, enjoying a leisurely canter back to Shire to take stock of her haul, as well as a well-deserved rest.

End thread.
