Ringo: Level 6, 2/3 Energy
Ugh, why did Rui keep butting into Kasumi's business like that? Couldn't she tell that Kasumi didn't want to hear any of it? At least she was being quiet now. Kasumi cupped her hand above her eyes, trying to judge how far they were from Cerise City.
"We should be a bit more than halfway there by now."
Kasumi let her hand drop with a sigh. So much for Rui being quiet. "Great," she said, and she would have meant it if she weren't so annoyed. A few steps later, she held her hand out toward Rui with a "Shh!" Luckily, instead of questioning it, Rui remained silent, allowing the sound of birdsong to filter into Kasumi's ears. It was quiet, but it sounded like deliberate singing instead of just the usual chirps of a bird Pokémon. Kasumi walked closer to the sound, leading her to an interesting sight: A Sylveon sat at the base of a tree, watching a green-ish Pidgey in a low branch sing softly.
... Wait. A green-ish Pidgey?
"Holy crap," Kasumi said without meaning to, catching the attention of the two Pokémon. The Pidgey—the shiny Pidgey—let out a panicked chirp and darted up to a higher branch, but the Sylveon stayed in place, watching the humans curiously.
"Oh, wow," Rui muttered, and for once, Kasumi agreed with her.
The Sylveon got to his feet and began to walk toward Rui and Kasumi, ribbon-like feelers waving. When he got close enough for Kasumi to touch him, Ringo chittered in what almost seemed like warning, but there wasn't any real bite behind it. Kasumi, too, felt strangely calm with a wild Pokémon so close to her. Maybe it was because she was way more interested in the Pidgey than this frilly thing. She looked up to see said Pidgey staring in what seemed to be shock. The Sylveon followed her gaze and squeaked something; a few tense moments later, the Pidgey fluttered down to land on her previous perch, still watching Kasumi and Rui warily.
"Were you singing?" Kasumi asked. Part of her wanted to grab a Poké Ball and just chuck it right at the Pidgey, but something was stopping her.
The Pidgey turned her head, seemingly embarrassed, and chirped quietly in response.
"It sounded lovely," Rui said. Kasumi turned and narrowed her eyes, but her usual anger at her sister's butting in just wasn't there. What was wrong with her? Was she really that excited over this shiny? Or was it because she actually agreed? That was getting a bit too common for comfort.
"Yeah, it sounded good," Kasumi said. "You shy about it or something?"
The Pidgey's lack of answer said everything Kasumi needed to know, but she still looked to the Sylveon for confirmation; the two seemed to be friends, after all. The Sylveon nodded, then turned to squeak something at the Pidgey. The Pidgey chirped nervously in response.
Ringo chittered excitedly at the two wild Pokémon, causing them to look at him curiously. The Sylveon seemed just as excited and squeaked his approval. Ringo turned to Kasumi, put his closed fist near his open mouth, and then moved that hand out, spreading his fingers as he did so. It took Kasumi a few moments to realize what he meant.
"Oh! Jam session?" she asked, and Ringo nodded. "Well, it'd be better if I had a guitar, but why not? Give us a beat, Ringo."
The Grookey jumped off Kasumi's shoulder and ran over to an adjacent tree, not wanting to drum on the one the Pidgey was occupying. He tapped his foot a few times to get a rhythm, then began to drum a simple beat on the tree. Kasumi, too, kept it simple, choosing a low-intensity song that fit the rhythm and that the Pidgey could easily join in on if she wanted. When she finished the first chorus, Kasumi began to worry that the Pidgey would be too shy to sing along with her, but she kept on, and her persistence paid off: A few lines into the next verse, the Pidgey began to chirp along, uncertainly at first, but Kasumi's smile seemed to spur her on, and soon, the two were singing together.
"Whoo!" Kasumi cheered when the song had ended. Ringo and the Sylveon, too, cheered, and Rui clapped behind them. The Pidgey twittered, flustered. "Come on, take a bow!" Kasumi demonstrated with a proud bow of her own. The Pidgey just bowed her head, but you know what? That was good enough.
"That was wonderful," Rui said.
"Of course," Kasumi said. "So! What do you say you come with me? You obviously like singing, and you're good at it; you just need more confidence. That's where I come in." She held out a Poké Ball in offer. "I'm putting a band together to take the Contest world by storm and show them I've got what it takes to be a rock star. Wanna be my backup singer?"

The spirits walk among us
Please, do not fear them
After several tense seconds of the Pidgey considering Kasumi's offer, the Tiny Bird Pokémon flew over to Kasumi and pecked at the proffered Poké Ball. Kasumi and Rui both gasped as it burst open and sucked the Pidgey in a flash of light. It shook in Kasumi's hand once... twice... three times... Click."YES!" Kasumi screamed, jumping in place and holding the Poké Ball toward the sky. Rui actually found herself startled by her sister's volume—it was rare for her to get that loud unless she was practicing her music... or deliberately playing other music as loudly as possible... Still, Rui smiled and said, "Congratulations, Kasumi." The Sylveon, which had taken a seat next to Rui, squeaked his approval, waving his feelers in the air. Kasumi stopped mid-cheer and cleared her throat dramatically. "Yeah," she said, voice cracking as it went back down to its normal volume, "it's pretty cool. I bet she'll get some good style points on stage." Despite her attempt to seem calmer, an excited, almost cat-like smile spread across her face as she spoke. Honestly, it was adorable, but Rui was pretty sure Kasumi would explode if she said that out loud. From his place at the base of the tree, Ringo snickered. Kasumi turned to him, her blush evident. "What?" she asked. Ringo just chittered his amusement before clambering back up onto Kasumi's shoulder. Kasumi pouted, but still scratched her Pokémon on the head. "Come on, help me think of a name for her. Gotta be a good singer name..." Rui covered her mouth with one hand to muffle her chuckle. For how expressive her sister could be, she was so shy about showing certain emotions. Maybe it was part of being "cool"? Rui certainly wouldn't know. As Kasumi mused aloud about names, Rui looked down at the Sylveon, who'd stood and was now stretching out his front legs. "I don't suppose you're looking for a trainer, too?" Rui asked. The Sylveon let out a curious squeak and looked up at her with a tilt of his head. "Admittedly, I specialize in Ghost-types, but it's always good to diversify, right?" The Sylveon looked at Rui for a few seconds longer, then turned to Clarence. With a squeak, he asked what Rui was like as a trainer. Clarence warbled about how Rui was really nice, but the Sylveon wanted more than just that—he wanted to know what Rui did. So Clarence explained that Rui studied ghosts like him, often delving deep into areas people considered haunted to see what lay within. The Sylveon's ears perked in interest. It sounded like an adventurous, exciting life... but would going with Rui really make him happy?

Ringo: Level 6, 2/3 Energy Joan★: Level 5, 3/3 Energy
"Joan!" Kasumi suddenly exclaimed. Ringo squeaked in question. "You know, after Joan Jett? Queen of Rock?" Ringo let out a long hoot—one that reminded Kasumi of someone saying "Ohhhhhhh"—and nodded, smiling. "Joan it is, then!" Kasumi continued. "We'll make her into a proper rock star yet. Well, I'm still gonna be the lead singer, but she'll be backup."
"Given her personality, that might be best for her," Rui said. "She seemed quite shy, after all."
"Exactly!" Kasumi proudly puffed her chest out, and wait, why was she agreeing with her sister again? "I mean, you don't have to tell me the obvious, Sis. Hey, where'd the Sylveon go?"
"I caught him while you were thinking up nicknames," Rui said, holding up the freshly occupied Poké Ball. "I think I'll name him Oberon, after the fairy king."
"Huh, surprised you went for him. I thought you were all about spooky Ghost-types."
Rui actually pouted at that. "It's good to diversify."
Kasumi didn't even try to stop the peals of laughter that escaped her. "Whatever you say, Sis." With that, she turned and continued down the path.
A few paces later, Ringo suddenly perked up, seeming to notice something. He hopped off of Kasumi's shoulder before she could say anything and scampered to the base of a berry bush. He picked up a fallen Cheri Berry and returned to his trainer, holding it out in offer. "Oh, nice," Kasumi said, taking it. "Thanks, buddy." Ringo hooted proudly.

The spirits walk among us
Please, do not fear them
Rui sighed and trudged after her laughing sister, her cheeks dusted pink. Well, at least they weren't fighting now. That was an improvement. A nearby rattling sound caught Rui's attention, stopping her in her tracks. Kasumi didn't seem to have heard it, though, with the way she continued nonchalantly down the path. Something purple poked out of the tall grass—an Ekans. "Oh," Rui said, taking a step back. Clarence floated behind her, staring at the Snake Pokémon. Rui really just wasn't have much luck with type match-ups today, was she? Both Clarence and Oberon were weak to Poison-types; Rui wished she had at least one of her other Pokémon with her. She took another careful step back to give the Ekans a wider berth. "It's all right," she said. "We don't want to hurt you." Peering between the long blades of grass the Ekans lay in, Rui noticed that the Ekans looked fatter than one usually would. It must have just eaten, which was fortunate—it was probably less likely to attack when it was full. Rui crept backwards along the path, keeping a careful eye on the wild Pokémon. Slowly, it lowered its head as Rui got farther away, and just as slowly, Rui turned around, keeping her ears open for any sign of movement. Aside from the gentle shifting of the grass as the Ekans lay back down, there was nothing. Rui sighed quietly in relief, then continued down the path. Kasumi had gotten ahead of them again, but Rui didn't want to risk disturbing the Ekans by running after her, so instead, she took Clarence's hand and continued down the path with wide strides.

Lv6, 2/3 Lv5, 3/3
Further down the path, Kasumi saw a man with short blond hair shaved at the sides leaning against a tree and tossing a Dusk Ball up and down. When he spotted Kasumi, he grinned maliciously and stepped away from the tree, Dusk Ball firmly in his hand. "You know, it's not a good idea for little girls to go wandering around these parts," he said.
"Ooh, I'm so scared," Kasumi shot back. "What are you supposed to be, the Route 1 Bandit?"
"Ha! You won't be so cocky when I'm through with you! Venom, let's go!" The delinquent tossed out the Dusk Ball he'd been holding, and it burst open in a flurry of shadows (okay, Kasumi had to admit that was really cool) to reveal a Croagunk, who croaked and got into a battle stance. Kasumi pulled out her phone and was aiming her camera at the Pokémon to get more information on it...
"Kasumi!"
... when she heard Rui calling out worriedly. Kasumi sighed loudly. "I've got this, Rui!" she shouted, barely bothering to turn her head. "Let's show 'em, Ringo!" With a hooting cry, Ringo hopped off Kasumi's shoulder and into the figurative arena. Kasumi ignored the delinquent's smirk as she shouted her first order: "Ringo, use Branch Poke!"
Ringo took the stick from his head and ran up to hit Venom with it. The Croagunk held his hands in front of him to block the attack, barely even flinching at the impact. He and his trainer both grinned.
"Venom, Poison Sting!" the delinquent commanded. Ringo's eyes widened in surprise as Venom pulled one of his hands back and then shot a poisonous stinger from his finger. Ringo shrieked and tumbled back at the super-effective attack.
"It's Poison-type!" Rui said. "Ringo's weak against Poison!"
"I figured that out, Rui!" Kasumi snapped. She took the second Poké Ball from her belt. "Ringo, get back! Joan, you're up!" Ringo ran behind Kasumi's legs as she tossed out Joan's Poké Ball. The shiny Pidgey tweeted and flapped her wings nervously.
"Oh-ho-ho!" the delinquent laughed, malice spreading across his features. "Pidgey or not, a shiny like that's gotta be worth a pretty Pen!"
"Like I'd let you anywhere near her!" Kasumi shouted back. "Joan, you've got this! Use—" Kasumi suddenly remembered Rui's presence behind her, and her older sister's advice about using non-attacking moves echoed in her head. Ugh, no, she wouldn't let Rui keep being right! "Tackle!" Kasumi commanded after a short pause.
Joan hesitated for a moment, then spread her wings and flew at the Croagunk with a full-body Tackle. Venom held up his arms as protection again, but the force of the move had a clearer impact this time.
"Hit 'em with another Poison Sting!" the delinquent commanded. Joan fluttered back when the stinger hit her, then shuddered.
"Crap," Kasumi hissed, realizing Joan had been poisoned. "Use Tackle again, Joan!"
"Venom, you know what to do!"
The two Pokémon continued their head-on attacks, Joan occasionally shuddering as the poison coursed through her. Gah, why didn't Kasumi have any Antidotes...?! But with one last desperate Tackle, Joan managed to knock Venom out despite seeming on the verge of fainting, herself.
"Tch, you got lucky!" the delinquent spat as he recalled his Croagunk. "But Shade here's gonna finish you off!" He tossed out another Dusk Ball, this one revealing a Sandile that hissed threateningly.
"Joan, come back," Kasumi said, holding out Joan's Poké Ball. It beamed the exhausted Pidgey back inside. "Ringo—" Kasumi looked down at her Grookey; he didn't look so hot, either. "C'mere." She kneeled down, fished a Potion out of her pack, and sprayed Ringo with it. Just like that, he perked back up and hooted out a battle cry. "All right!" Kasumi exclaimed. "Let's go!"
"Shade, Hone Claws!" the delinquent commanded before Ringo could return to the ring. The Sandile's claws shone as he sharpened them. Ringo ran back into the fray and beat his stick against the ground in challenge. Kasumi wasn't worried about the jump-start Shade had gotten. She knew she had a type advantage this time: Sandile was clearly a Ground-type, which was weak to Grass. This would be a piece of cake.
"Ringo, use Branch Poke!"
"Shade, hit 'im with Crunch!"
Thanks to Shade's Hone Claws, the Crunch, already a powreful attack, hit with even more force, but the Sandile's type advantage was immediately obvious when he was hit by Ringo's Grass-type attack. It only took one more to bring the Desert Croc Pokémon down, much to his trainer's clear frustration.
"Dammit," the delinquent hissed, and Kasumi could practically feel Rui's surprise behind her at the swear. "Can't believe I lost to some little brat."
Ringo hopped back onto Kasumi's shoulder, chittering triumphantly, as Kasumi crossed her arms and grinned. "What was that about how 'little girls' shouldn't wander around here?"
"Oh, shut up!" The delinquent stepped closer. Ringo growled in warning, and Kasumi heard Rui step closer, but before Kasumi could tell her sister to chill, the delinquent pressed Kasumi's prize money, plus a few other items, into her arms. "Just take your crap and get outta here."
Kasumi tilted her head up proudly, smirking. "Gladly. C'mon, Sis. We don't need to worry about this guy." She continued down the path.
"Hope your dumb green Pidgey likes that poison!" the delinquent called after them, trying to scrape up the last of his pride. Kasumi turned around, eyes narrowed, to shout something back, but instead, she locked eyes with Rui, who gave her a worried look. Eh, forget it, that guy wasn't worth it. With a "Hmph," Kasumi held her head high and continued toward Cerise.

"Are you all right?" Rui asked softly once the delinquent was far enough away. "Yeah?" Kasumi replied, raising an eyebrow. "Why wouldn't I be?" "That man didn't hurt you or anything?" Rui glanced behind her to make sure said man was still walking away. "No, Rui. Just my Pokémon," Kasumi grumbled, glancing down at Joan's Poké Ball. Rui frowned. "We should have brought some more healing items..." "Ugh, I know, Rui!" Rui squeezed Clarence's hand in her frustration, but his concerned warble snapped her out of it and caused her to loosen her grip. She took a slow breath through her nose. "I wasn't trying to scold you, Kasumi. I'm just as much to blame for not thinking of it." Kasumi stopped mid-step, prompting Rui to pause, as well. "Wait, you don't have any, either?" Kasumi asked. "I'm afraid not... but we should be close to Cerise now, so we can visit the Pokémon Center and get some... supplies?" Rui's statement devolved into more of a question as her sister began to laugh. "What?" "Oh, man, I was expecting another lecture about being responsible or something, but not even Little Miss Perfect has an Antidote or anything!" Rui stiffened as Kasumi continued down the route, still laughing. Little Miss Perfect? Was that... how Kasumi thought of her? Rui slowly walked after her, the thought weighing on her heart. "What the—?" Kasumi suddenly asked. Rui looked up to see a Patrat running around her ankles, sniffing curiously. Ringo squeaked at him, prompting him to run over to Rui and do the same thing. "Oh!" Rui exclaimed. Clarence pulled in closer to her, watching the Patrat, but otherwise didn't seem too bothered by its presence. "Well, hello, there," Rui said. The Patrat stood up on its hind legs and squeaked out something with a nod. He turned back around and ran in the direction he'd come from, where a young man in a green scout uniform was approaching. "Heya!" he called with a wave. "Sorry about that—Patrat's just eager to get going. We're headed for the Emerald Forest." "Oh, it's no trouble," Rui replied. "He seems friendly." "He is. Maybe a bit too friendly sometimes," the scout said with a laugh. The Patrat chittered, prompting his trainer to reach down and pat his head. "Anyway, stay safe, you two!" "Thank you. You, as well." Rui bowed politely. "Yeah, you, too," Kasumi added with a small wave.

Cerise was in sight when Kasumi heard the sound of fallen leaves being rustled around. She glanced over into the tall grass to see a baby Kangaskhan playing in a leaf pile, squeaking cheerfully as it tossed up a handful of leaves. A small smile pulled at the edge of Kasumi's lips. Okay, even she had to admit that was pretty cute. But where there was a baby Kangaskhan...
There was a growl, and from behind a tree came, just as Kasumi suspected, the mother Kangaskhan. Kasumi raised her hands and backed away. "Chill, chill, I'm not gonna hurt 'em," she said. She glanced over at Rui to see her also putting distance between herself and the mother Kangaskhan. The baby looked over at its mother with a high, curious sound. This, combined with the humans moving away from her baby, seemed to calm her, though she still walked over to her child to pat it on the head, earning a delighted sound.

The spirits walk among us
Please, do not fear them
A baby Kangaskhan... How curious, Rui thought. Not because it was on its own—no, Rui knew its mother was lurking just out of sight, keeping an eye on her child—but because of the nature of the baby itself. This was far from Rui's field of expertise, but as far as she knew, Kangaskhan was the only Pokémon whose baby wasn't a pre-evolved form of itself despite looking so different from its mother. It was simply a baby Kangaskhan. Rui couldn't help but wonder why that was, but of course, such questions were best left to the breeding and evolution experts. Her shoulders slumped with relief at Kasumi's reaction to the mother Kangaskhan. Given how hot-headed Kasumi could be, Rui was worried she'd try to challenge the enraged mother to a battle or, worse, try to catch the baby. Instead, Rui followed Kasumi's lead and backed away from the two Kangaskhan before continuing down the path. "I wasn't gonna do anything stupid, y'know," Kasumi said, side-eyeing Rui. "They told us when my class took that trip to the Safari Zone, 'Don't go near baby Kangaskhans. Their moms are watching, and they will attack.'" Her voice was lowered in an imitation of the attendant who had said that. "I'm glad," Rui said. "I wouldn't have wanted you to get hurt." "Yeah, yeah." Kasumi waved her hand dismissively. Ringo looked at Rui and tilted his head; Rui could only shrug. Suddenly, there was a bold bird cry from above, and something swooped over Rui's head, causing her to duck instinctively with a gasp. A Rookidee landed in front of her and spread its wings with another cry. Was it challenging her? " Rookidee, the Tiny Bird Pokémon," a synthesized voice said; Kasumi had taken out her phone to scan the Rookidee. " It will bravely challenge any opponent, no matter how powerful. This Pokémon benefits from every battle—even a defeat increases its strength a bit." Well, that answered that question, Rui supposed. She looked over at Clarence, who stared at the Rookidee warily, then to Ringo, who was doing much the same. Both of them had the disadvantage here, and with Kasumi's Pidgey poisoned... "Very well, then," Rui said, taking the second Poké Ball from her belt. "I shall be your opponent. Oberon, let's go." She released the Sylveon from his Poké Ball; he trilled a battle cry and waved his feelers at the Rookidee. "Use..." At that moment, Rui realized she wasn't actually sure what moves Oberon knew. "Play Rough?" Oberon turned to Rui with a confused squeak and an equally confused look, giving the Rookidee the chance to sneak in with a Peck. "Oh, brother," Kasumi grumbled loudly enough for Rui to hear. She pointed her phone's camera at Oberon. "He knows Disarming Voice, Bite, Covet, and Helping Hand. Huh, his ability's Pixilate. It says that's pretty rare." "Thank you, Kasumi," Rui said, though her embarrassment at not knowing her own Pokémon's moves made her voice quieter than usual. She cleared her throat. "Then, Oberon, use Disarming Voice!" Oberon perked up at that order. He let out a cry, waving his feelers as if guiding the sound to his opponent. The Rookidee winced as she took emotional damage from the attack. But she was quickly on the move again, darting about to confound her opponent before getting in another Peck. If only Rui could slow the Rookidee down... Perhaps... "Oberon, try Covet," Rui said. The Rookidee didn't seem to be holding an item, but if she remembered correctly, Covet worked by getting the opponent to put their guard down to create an opening. Oberon, quickly gleaning onto Rui's intentions, put on his cutest face and began to swirl his feelers around, causing them to give off a calming aura. The Rookidee slowed down in her darting about; even Kasumi looked more relaxed. Then, with his opponent subdued, Oberon rushed forward and swiped at her with his front paw, which glowed pink with fey energy—the work of Pixilate, no doubt. The Rookidee cried out in alarm as she was hit. She flapped her wings as her awareness returned and tried to reorient herself for another attack, but she wasn't quite fast enough. "Oberon, use Bite!" With that final attack, the Rookidee tweeted weakly and fainted. Oberon let out a cheer and waved his feelers in celebration. "Excellent work, Oberon," Rui said. "Return." She recalled him back into his Poké Ball. She turned to Kasumi to thank her again, but Kasumi spoke up first: "You know, you should really learn to use your Pokédex app." And there it was: the teasing about Rui's technological ineptitude. "It would be helpful, but... it's so different from my old Pokédex," Rui said. "It's really not that hard," Kasumi said, closing the distance between her and Rui. "Look, you just tap the app icon, tap 'Scan,' and point your camera at the Pokémon you wanna scan." Rui took out her phone—it was a bit of an older model, something else that Kasumi teased her over, but Rui insisted that it worked fine—and took a few moments to remember which button to press to turn the screen on. "Where is it?" she asked. "What?" Kasumi asked, leaning over for a better look. "The application." Kasumi snickered. "Nobody calls them that, Rui! Everyone says 'app.'" Rui's mouth curled into a pout, which only made Kasumi laugh harder. "You know what, I'll show you when we get to Cerise." Rui couldn't help but smile at that. Even with the teasing, in a way, it would be a bonding moment between the two before they went their separate ways. And with how rocky things had been between them, Rui would take any sort of bonding she could get. "Then let's go."
