The spirits walk among us
Please, do not fear them
Rui had never pictured herself as an archaeologist, yet she supposed it fit her field of research. After all, spirits were often drawn to their past possessions, tethers of sorts that drew them back to this world, and being able to unearth those and understand the history behind them would help her connect better with any spirits she wished to communicate with. Thus, Rui found herself with a researcher from Shire Town who'd agreed to let Rui assist with a dig on Route 1 for practice, an opportunity that Rui made sure to thank the research profusely for. He seemed ecstatic about the company, though, which made Rui feel less like she was imposing on him.
Once they were deep enough in the tunnels, Rui took the set of picks she'd been given and got to work.

Rui SasakiNothing happened! All rolls were failed. When Rui started digging into the first suitable vein she came across, all she found at the tunnel's end was a pile of egg shells for common Ground-type Pokémon, such as Diglett. She had failed to consider that location was everything. Route 1 was a heavily-trafficked area, especially among new trainers. This tunnel had likely been mined quite a bit already; she was going to need to put in quite a bit of effort to find anything of note.

The eggshells were a far cry from anything noteworthy, but they did serve an important purpose: With them, Rui had proven that she was capable of digging delicately without breaking anything fragile.
"Great job!" the researcher said. "We'll have to move further away from the road if we want to find anything interesting, though. I'm sure you can imagine it, but Route 1's pretty heavily traveled, so a lot of these areas have already been dug up."
Of course, that made sense—treasure hunters of all kind had probably picked the main roads clean by this point. Thus, Rui and the researcher gathered up their equipment and headed deeper into the woods, where they would hopefully find something that would make this trip worth it...

Something has happened! Congratulations! Rui SasakiSuccess! After a short trek farther away from the trodden path, you'd find a good spot to start digging again. Once you start, it doesn't take long for a brightly colored shard to pop from the stone. You found a Cyan Shard!

The second tunnel proved to be immediately more fruitful: Rui excavated a cyan-colored shard of some sort and pinched it between her thumb and forefinger.
"Oh, good find!" the researcher, David, piped up. "A lot of archaeologists think those are fragments of Plates—with a capital P, like the ones Arceus is said to use."
Rui had only faintly heard of such a legend, but she supposed it made sense if that were true. After all, Ageos was known for its past ties to various Legendaries.
"That one might be from a Sky Plate?" David continued. "Maybe an Icicle Plate... We'll have to take a better look back at the lab."
Rui nodded and put the shard into a bag for safekeeping, then began to dig again.

Rui SasakiA random event has occurred!
The vein that Rui seemed to be working was rich - after a few more minutes of digging at the end of the tunnel, Rui felt recoil as she struck an object that seemed to be glowing on its own. Its light was blinding compared to the darkness around her, the only light coming from her mining hat. She had unearthed the end of a Shiny Stone - while it would take some work to get it completely loose, this was quite the find!

Rui sucked in an involuntary gasp of surprise when her pick recoiled against something hard. A thin beam of light shone from the cracks in the earth, forcing her to squint. Once her eyes had adjusted to the sudden brightness, she realized the light was coming from some sort of stone. Carefully, she dug around it, causing the area around her to grow brighter and brighter as more dirt and rock fell away, revealing a Shiny Stone.
"Oh, wow, you don't see a lot of whole Evolution Stones down here," David said. "Good work!"
"Thank you," Rui said with a smile. Admittedly, she wasn't sure how useful it would be to her—after all, no Ghost-type that she knew of evolved with it—but it was still a good find.

Rui SasakiA random event has occurred!
The vein Rui had been working on was the gift that kept on giving. After a strong stroke of her pick, she heard a metallic noise reverberate through the offshoot she was working at. She had located a large chunk of Copper ore! It would take a bit of effort to dislodge it from the surrounding stone, and it was difficult to tell exactly how large the chunk was until she freed it from the earth completely, but this could potentially be a big find!

"Oh!" Rui exclaimed at the metallic reverberation. She'd stumbled upon... something. It definitely wasn't just rock, but Rui wasn't knowledgeable enough to know exactly what she'd hit.
"Find something else?" David asked, shining his light into the spot Rui had been digging into. "Oh, copper ore! You're on a roll today, aren't you?" He grinned, and Rui couldn't help but feel a bit flustered.
"Beginner's luck, I suppose," she said with a nervous smile.
"We might need some tougher picks for this..." David mused. "One sec." He sorted through the supplies they'd lugged into the tunnel and used both hands to pull out a larger pick, one used for more traditional mining. "This'll be a bit heavy, but it's better than trying to chip away at the rock with one of the archaeological picks. Besides, we don't have to worry about breaking anything with ore."
He handed the pick to Rui, who took it in both hands like he had, and then slowly let go, giving Rui a chance to adjust to its weight. Oh, wow, it was heavy... No wonder miners tended to be muscular.
"I'll come at it from the other side," David said, taking a second pick with more ease—it seemed he was more used to this kind of work. "It'll go faster if we're both going at it."
"Right," Rui said, nodding. Though she was pretty sure David was going to be doing most of the work here... Still, after some digging that left both of them sweating and taking long swigs from their water bottles, they'd managed to mine the chunk of ore out.
"Phew!" David exclaimed in a way that sounded way less tired than Rui felt. "I think you get the gist of it now, yeah? Let's get back to the lab and sort out what we found."
Rui opened her mouth to protest—it was clear that David still had plenty of energy left for this—but her sore arms protested first. So instead, she nodded, opting to save her breath for the trek back home.
Back at the lab, the two went over their finds. In addition to the eggshells that the first site had yielded, David had found some other colored shards and bits of broken pottery.
"Not too shabby," he said. He examined the cyan shard for a moment, then handed it to Rui. "Here, you should keep this. And the rest of the stuff you found, too. The ore and stone isn't going to help much with our research, and we've already got plenty of shards just like this one. I hear if you get enough of them, they can be used to make your Pokémon stronger."
"Is that so?" Rui asked. "Well, thank you. I'll be sure to remember that. And thank you for everything else today." She bowed deeply in her usual Kanto style.
"Hey, it's no problem!" Now David was the one who seemed flushed. "I'm always happy to help folks get into archaeology. Just give us a call if you find anything interesting."
"I most certainly will."
With another bow and round of goodbyes, Rui left, taking with her her finds, a mining kit of her own, and a wealth of new knowledge.
